    कतमोऽपि न वेनः स्यात्पञ्चानां पुरुषं प्रति । तस्मात्केनाप्युपायेन मनः कृष्णे निवेशयेत् ॥ ७-१-३१ ॥katamo'pi na venaH syAtpaJcAnAM puruSaM prati । tasmAtkenApyupAyena manaH kRSNe nivezayet ॥ 7-1-31 ॥Somehow or other, one must consider the form of Kṛṣṇa very seriously. Then, by one of the five different processes mentioned above, one can return home, back to Godhead. Atheists like King Vena, however, being unable to think of Kṛṣṇa’s form in any of these five ways, cannot attain salvation. Therefore, one must somehow think of Kṛṣṇa, whether in a friendly way or inimically. ॥ 7-1-31 ॥

    गोप्यः कामाद्भयात्कंसो द्वेषाच्चैद्यादयो नृपाः । सम्बन्धाद्वृष्णयः स्नेहाद्यूयं भक्त्या वयं विभो ॥ ७-१-३० ॥gopyaH kAmAdbhayAtkaMso dveSAccaidyAdayo nRpAH । sambandhAdvRSNayaH snehAdyUyaM bhaktyA vayaM vibho ॥ 7-1-30 ॥My dear King Yudhiṣṭhira, the gopīs by their lusty desires, Kaṁsa by his fear, Śiśupāla and other kings by envy, the Yadus by their familial relationship with Kṛṣṇa, you Pāṇḍavas by your great affection for Kṛṣṇa, and we, the general devotees, by our devotional service, have obtained the mercy of Kṛṣṇa. ॥ 7-1-30 ॥

    कामाद्द्वेषाद्भयात्स्नेहाद्यथा भक्त्येश्वरे मनः । आवेश्य तदघं हित्वा बहवस्तद्गतिं गताः ॥ ७-१-२९ ॥kAmAddveSAdbhayAtsnehAdyathA bhaktyezvare manaH । Avezya tadaghaM hitvA bahavastadgatiM gatAH ॥ 7-1-29 ॥Many, many persons have attained liberation simply by thinking of Kṛṣṇa with great attention and giving up sinful activities. This great attention may be due to lusty desires, inimical feelings, fear, affection or devotional service. I shall now explain how one receives Kṛṣṇa’s mercy simply by concentrating one’s mind upon Him. ॥ 7-1-29 ॥

    एवं कृष्णे भगवति मायामनुज ईश्वरे । वैरेण पूतपाप्मानस्तमापुरनुचिन्तया ॥ ७-१-२८ ॥evaM kRSNe bhagavati mAyAmanuja Izvare । vaireNa pUtapApmAnastamApuranucintayA ॥ 7-1-28 ॥If the conditioned souls somehow or other think of Kṛṣṇa, who is sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha, they will become free from their sins. Whether thinking of Him as their worshipable Lord or an enemy, because of constantly thinking of Him they will regain their spiritual bodies. ॥ 7-1-28 ॥

    कीटः पेशस्कृता रुद्धः कुड्यायां तमनुस्मरन् । संरम्भभययोगेन विन्दते तत्सरूपताम् ॥ ७-१-२७ ॥kITaH pezaskRtA ruddhaH kuDyAyAM tamanusmaran । saMrambhabhayayogena vindate tatsarUpatAm ॥ 7-1-27 ॥A grassworm confined in a hole of a wall by a bee always thinks of the bee in fear and enmity and later becomes a bee simply because of such remembrance. Similarly, ॥ 7-1-27 ॥

    यथा वैरानुबन्धेन मर्त्यस्तन्मयतामियात् । न तथा भक्तियोगेन इति मे निश्चिता मतिः ॥ ७-१-२६ ॥yathA vairAnubandhena martyastanmayatAmiyAt । na tathA bhaktiyogena iti me nizcitA matiH ॥ 7-1-26 ॥Nārada Muni continued: By devotional service one cannot achieve such intense absorption in thought of the Supreme Personality of Godhead as one can through enmity toward Him. That is my opinion. ॥ 7-1-26 ॥

    तस्माद्वैरानुबन्धेन निर्वैरेण भयेन वा । स्नेहात्कामेन वा युञ्ज्यात्कथञ्चिन्नेक्षते पृथक् ॥ ७-१-२५ ॥tasmAdvairAnubandhena nirvaireNa bhayena vA । snehAtkAmena vA yuJjyAtkathaJcinnekSate pRthak ॥ 7-1-25 ॥Therefore by enmity or by devotional service, by fear, by affection or by lusty desire — by all of these or any one of them — if a conditioned soul somehow or other concentrates his mind upon the Lord, the result is the same, for the Lord, because of His blissful position, is never affected by enmity or friendship. ॥ 7-1-25 ॥

    यन्निबद्धोऽभिमानोऽयं तद्वधात्प्राणिनां वधः । तथा न यस्य कैवल्यादभिमानोऽखिलात्मनः । परस्य दमकर्तुर्हि हिंसा केनास्य कल्प्यते ॥ ७-१-२४ ॥yannibaddho'bhimAno'yaM tadvadhAtprANinAM vadhaH । tathA na yasya kaivalyAdabhimAno'khilAtmanaH । parasya damakarturhi hiMsA kenAsya kalpyate ॥ 7-1-24 ॥Because of the bodily conception of life, the conditioned soul thinks that when the body is annihilated the living being is annihilated. Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is the supreme controller, the Supersoul of all living entities. Because He has no material body, He has no false conception of “I and mine.” It is therefore incorrect to think that He feels pleasure or pain when blasphemed or offered prayers. This is impossible for Him. Thus He has no enemy and no friend. When He chastises the demons it is for their good, and when He accepts the prayers of the devotees it is for their good. He is affected neither by prayers nor by blasphemy. ॥ 7-1-24 ॥

    हिंसा तदभिमानेन दण्डपारुष्ययोर्यथा । वैषम्यमिह भूतानां ममाहमिति पार्थिव ॥ ७-१-२३ ॥hiMsA tadabhimAnena daNDapAruSyayoryathA । vaiSamyamiha bhUtAnAM mamAhamiti pArthiva ॥ 7-1-23 ॥My dear King, the conditioned soul, being in the bodily conception of life, considers his body to be his self and considers everything in relationship with the body to be his. Because he has this wrong conception of life, he is subjected to dualities like praise and chastisement. ॥ 7-1-23 ॥

    नारद उवाच निन्दनस्तवसत्कारन्यक्कारार्थं कलेवरम् । प्रधानपरयो राजन्नविवेकेन कल्पितम् ॥ ७-१-२२ ॥nArada uvAca nindanastavasatkAranyakkArArthaM kalevaram । pradhAnaparayo rAjannavivekena kalpitam ॥ 7-1-22 ॥The great sage Śrī Nāradajī said: O King, blasphemy and praise, chastisement and respect, are experienced because of ignorance. The body of the conditioned soul is planned by the Lord for suffering in the material world through the agency of the external energy. ॥ 7-1-22 ॥
