    राजोवाच समः प्रियः सुहृद्ब्रह्मन् भूतानां भगवान् स्वयम् । इन्द्रस्यार्थे कथं दैत्यानवधीद्विषमो यथा ॥ ७-१-१ ॥rAjovAca samaH priyaH suhRdbrahman bhUtAnAM bhagavAn svayam । indrasyArthe kathaM daityAnavadhIdviSamo yathA ॥ 7-1-1 ॥King Parīkṣit inquired: My dear brāhmaṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Viṣṇu, being everyone’s well-wisher, is equal and extremely dear to everyone. How, then, did He become partial like a common man for the sake of Indra and thus kill Indra’s enemies? How can a person equal to everyone be partial to some and inimical toward others? ॥ 7-1-1 ॥

    प्रचरेत नरः कामात्तस्य दण्डो वधः स्मृतः । भरतस्तु महीपालो वयं त्वादेशवर्तिनः ॥ ४-१८-२३pracareta naraH kAmAttasya daNDo vadhaH smRtaH । bharatastu mahIpAlo vayaM tvAdezavartinaH ॥ 4-18-23- out of lust should be punished and killed according to smriti. Bharata is a king and we follow his command. ॥ 4-18-23॥

I will not pardon you for your sin. Whosoever transgresses dharma against his own daughter, sister or brother's wife . - ॥ 4-18-22॥

    न हि धर्मविरुद्धस्य लोकवृत्तादपेयुषः । दण्डादन्यत्र पश्यामि निग्रहं हरियूथप ॥ ४-१८-२१na hi dharmaviruddhasya lokavRttAdapeyuSaH । daNDAdanyatra pazyAmi nigrahaM hariyUthapa ॥ 4-18-21'O lord of monkeys I do not see any other way of controlling a person excepting punishing the one who has acted against dharma and swerved from the accepted code of conduct. ॥ 4-18-21॥

    तद्व्यतीतस्य ते धर्मात्कामवृत्तस्य वानर । भ्रातृभार्यावमर्शेऽस्मिन्दण्डोऽयं प्रतिपादितः ॥ ४-१८-२०tadvyatItasya te dharmAtkAmavRttasya vAnara । bhrAtRbhAryAvamarze'smindaNDo'yaM pratipAditaH ॥ 4-18-20'O monkey since you have violated morality by sinning against your brother's wife, this punishment is justified. ॥ 4-18-20॥

    अस्य त्वं धरमाणस्य सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः । रुमायां वर्तसे कामात्स्नुषायां पापकर्मकृत् ॥ ४-१८-१९asya tvaM dharamANasya sugrIvasya mahAtmanaH । rumAyAM vartase kAmAtsnuSAyAM pApakarmakRt ॥ 4-18-19'You are a sinner, since you live with Ruma, who is your virtual daughter-in-law, when the great self Sugriva is alive. ( A younger brother is like a son and his wife, a daughter-in-law ). ॥ 4-18-19॥

    तदेतत्कारणं पश्य यदर्थं त्वं मया हतः । भ्रातुर्वर्तसि भार्यायां त्यक्त्वा धर्मं सनातनम् ॥ ४-१८-१८tadetatkAraNaM pazya yadarthaM tvaM mayA hataH । bhrAturvartasi bhAryAyAM tyaktvA dharmaM sanAtanam ॥ 4-18-18'Now know the reason why I struck you down. Having abandoned the eternal law, you are living with your younger brother's wife. ॥ 4-18-18॥

It is not proper for you to despise me with mere anger and malice. ॥ 4-18-17॥

    चपलश्चपलैस्सार्धं वानरैरकृतात्मभिः । जात्यन्ध इव जात्यन्धैर्मन्त्रयन् प्रेक्षसे नु किम् ॥ ४-१८-१६capalazcapalaissArdhaM vAnarairakRtAtmabhiH । jAtyandha iva jAtyandhairmantrayan prekSase nu kim ॥ 4-18-16'You are fickle by nature. Your consultants are frivolous, pettyminded monkeys. It is like one born blind suppporting another blind by birth. What do you know ( about dharma )? ॥ 4-18-16॥

    सूक्ष्मः परमदुरजेयस्सतां धर्मः प्लवङ्गम । हृदिस्थस्सर्वभूतानामात्मा वेद शुभाशुभम् ॥ ४-१८-१५sUkSmaH paramadurajeyassatAM dharmaH plavaGgama । hRdisthassarvabhUtAnAmAtmA veda zubhAzubham ॥ 4-18-15'O monkey dharma is very subtle. It is extremely difficult to understand. Installed in the hearts of all living beings the self knows good and evil (soul is the witness of good and evil). ॥ 4-18-15॥
