[अष्वत्थ] न च तावज जिता गावॊ न च सीमान्तरं गताः न हास्तिनपुरं पराप्तास तवं च कर्ण विकत्थसे ॥ ४-४५-१ ॥
'Aswatthaman said, "O Karna, the kine have neither been conquered nor crossed the boundary of their rightful domain, nor have they yet reached Hastinapura."' ॥ 4-45-1 ॥
english translation
[aSvattha] na ca tAvaja jitA gAvò na ca sImAntaraM gatAH na hAstinapuraM parAptAsa tavaM ca karNa vikatthase ॥ 4-45-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसंग्रामान सुबहूञ जित्वा लब्ध्वा च विपुलं धनम विजित्य च परां भूमिं नाहुः किं चन पौरुषम ॥ ४-४५-२ ॥
'Why then dost thou boast so arrogantly of thyself? Though thou hast won many battles, amassed great wealth, and vanquished hostile hosts, true heroes speak little of their prowess.' ॥ 4-45-2 ॥

saMgrAmAna subahUJa jitvA labdhvA ca vipulaM dhanama vijitya ca parAM bhUmiM nAhuH kiM cana pauruSama ॥ 4-45-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपचत्य अग्निर अवाक्यस तु तूष्णीं भाति दिवाकरः तूष्णीं धारयते लॊकान वसुधा स चराचरान ॥ ४-४५-३ ॥
'Fire burns silently, the sun shines without sound, and the Earth bears all creatures, both mobile and immobile, without complaint.' ॥ 4-45-3 ॥

pacatya agnira avAkyasa tu tUSNIM bhAti divAkaraH tUSNIM dhArayate lòkAna vasudhA sa carAcarAna ॥ 4-45-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptचातुर्वर्ण्यस्य कर्माणि विहितानि मनीषिभिः धनं यैर अधिगन्तव्यं यच च कुर्वन न दुष्यति ॥ ४-४५-४ ॥
'The Self-existent has ordained these duties for the four orders, so that by performing them, each may acquire wealth without reproach.' ॥ 4-45-4 ॥

cAturvarNyasya karmANi vihitAni manISibhiH dhanaM yaira adhigantavyaM yaca ca kurvana na duSyati ॥ 4-45-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअधीत्य बराह्मणॊ वेदान याजयेत यजेत च कषत्रियॊ धनुर आश्रित्य जयेतैव न याजयेत वैश्यॊ ऽधिगम्य दरव्याणि बरह्मकर्माणि कारयेत ॥ ४-४५-५ ॥
'A Brahmana, having studied the Vedas, should perform sacrifices himself and officiate at the sacrifices of others. A Kshatriya, relying on his bow, should also perform sacrifices but must never officiate at the sacrifices of others. A Vaishya, having earned wealth, should ensure that the Vedic rites are performed for himself.' ॥ 4-45-5 ॥

adhItya barAhmaNò vedAna yAjayeta yajeta ca kaSatriyò dhanura Azritya jayetaiva na yAjayeta vaizyò 'dhigamya daravyANi barahmakarmANi kArayeta ॥ 4-45-5 ॥
