[वै] निर्याय नगराच छूरा वयूढानीकाः परहारिणः तरिगर्तान अस्पृशन मत्स्याः सूर्ये परिणते सति ।। ४-३१-१ ।।

'Vaiśampāyana said: "Marching out of the city, the heroic Matsyas—fierce smiters and arrayed in proper battle formation—overtook the Trigartas when the sun had passed its zenith."' ।। 4-31-1 ।।

'Both armies, inflamed with fury and eager to capture the king, let out deafening war cries.' ।। 4-31-2 ।।

'Then, the terrible elephants, maddened with rage and ridden by skilled warriors on both sides, were driven forward with spiked clubs and hooks.' ।। 4-31-3 ।।

'And the encounter, O King, that took place when the sun hung low on the horizon was dreadful and fierce—like the ancient battle between the gods and the Asuras.' ।। 4-31-4 ।।

उदतिष्ठद रजॊ भौमं न परज्ञायत किं चन पक्षिणश चापतन भूमौ सैन्येन रजसावृताः ।। ४-३१-५ ।।

'It was terrifying enough to make one's hair stand on end, and vast enough to swell the kingdom of Yama. As foot soldiers, cavalry, chariots, and elephants from both sides rushed upon one another, striking and slashing, thick clouds of dust rose into the air, obscuring all vision. Shrouded in that blinding storm of dust raised by the warring hosts, even the birds lost their way and fell to the ground.' ।। 4-31-5 ।।

udatiSThada rajò bhaumaM na parajJAyata kiM cana pakSiNaza cApatana bhUmau sainyena rajasAvRtAH || 4-31-5 ||
