Just as on the previous day Dharmarāja, the Kurus’ delight, had arranged the battle-array, so too the foremost men of Cedi went to their assigned stations and stood firm there together with the foremost Pāñcālas.

Then, upon the field, thousands of kettledrums struck with mighty force resounded; conch-calls and the booming of war-drums rose through every division, accompanied by lion-like shouts.

Then the warriors’ bows, loosed together with their arrows, thundered with a mighty roar; in an instant the great blare of conches (śaṅkha) overlaid and obscured the sounds of kettledrums (bherī) and panavas.

Seeing the sky veiled by the sound of conches, and the net of dust swiftly raised from the earth—spread out like a vast canopy of light—the warriors rushed forward at once.

A chariot-warrior (rathī), struck by a chariot, fell—together with his charioteer, horses, chariot, and banner. An elephant, struck by an elephant, fell; and a foot-soldier, struck by a foot-soldier, fell.
