अनुमानेन संज्ञाभिर्नामगोत्रैश्च संयुगे । वर्तते स्म तदा युद्धं तत्र तत्र विशां पते॥६-५३-६॥
Then, in that engagement, the fighting went on here and there, with recognition made only by inference, by signals, and by names and lineages, O lord of the people.

न व्यूहो भिद्यते तत्र कौरवाणां कथंचन । रक्षितः सत्यसंधेन भारद्वाजेन धीमता॥६-५३-७॥
There the Kaurava formation could not be breached in any way, for it was protected by Bhāradvāja, steadfast in his vow and keen in intellect.

तथैव पाण्डवेयानां रक्षितः सव्यसाचिना । नाभिद्यत महाव्यूहो भीमेन च सुरक्षितः॥६-५३-८॥
Likewise, the great Pandava battle-array—guarded by Savyasācin and firmly secured by Bhīma—was not breached.

सेनाग्रादभिनिष्पत्य प्रायुध्यंस्तत्र मानवाः । उभयोः सेनयो राजन्व्यतिषक्तरथद्विपाः॥६-५३-९॥
Men surged forth from the front of the armies and fought there; and, O king, the chariots and elephants of both forces became intermingled.
