Gāṅgeya (Bhīṣma), in the fight, struck Pārtha (Arjuna) with nine arrows; Arjuna countered by piercing him with ten arrows aimed at vital points.

english translation

Then the Pāṇḍava Arjuna, famed in battle, with a well-aimed volley of a thousand arrows, checked Bhīṣma’s movement in every direction, constraining his field of action.

english translation

Then, O Kaurava, Bhīṣma Śāṃtanava checked that volley of arrows with a counter-volley, thereby obstructing Pārtha’s advance.

english translation

Both were intensely exhilarated, both approving of combat; they fought without yielding advantage, each intent on reciprocating what had been done.

english translation

The clustered volleys released from Bhīṣma’s bow were seen breaking apart, being split by Arjuna’s arrows.
