Arjuna said: Those who set aside the prescriptions of śāstra yet perform worship endowed with faith—what is their orientation, O Kṛṣṇa? Is it sattva, rajas, or tamas?

english translation

The Blessed Lord said: The faith of embodied beings is threefold, arising from their own nature—sāttvika, rājasika, and tāmasika. Hear it.

english translation

O Bhārata, each person’s faith accords with their constitutive disposition (sattva). A person is, as it were, made of faith; whatever one’s faith is, that indeed one becomes.

english translation

Those of sāttvika disposition worship the devas; those of rājasa disposition worship yakṣas and rākṣasas; and others—people of tāmasa disposition—worship the departed spirits and hosts of elemental beings.

english translation

Those people who undertake severe austerities not prescribed by authoritative teaching—motivated by hypocrisy and egoism, and driven by the force of desire and attachment—engage in such discipline.
