Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: At sunrise, Sañjaya, which side first appeared eager and uplifted for battle—my men, with Bhīṣma as their central leader on the field, or the Pāṇḍavas, with Bhīma as their central leader at that time?

Sañjaya said: O king, both armies advanced as though equal; both battle-formations appeared confident. Both were variegated, shining like streaked forest landscapes, and both were filled with elephants, chariots, and horses.

The Kauravas, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, stood facing west; the sons of Pṛthā stood facing east, ready to fight—like the host of the lord of the Daityas on the Kaurava side, and like the host of the lord of the Devas on the Pāṇḍava side.
