ॐ नमश्चण्डिकायै ॥ मार्कण्डेय उवाच ॥ ॐ यद्गुह्यं परमं लोके सर्वरक्षाकरं नृणाम्। यन्न कस्य चिदाख्यातं तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह॥१॥
Kavach starts Salutations to Chandika Devi. Thus spoke Markandeya: O Lord Brahmadeva (Grand father of all) , please tell me that which is very secret and has not been told by anyone to anybody else and which Protects all human beings in this world.
english translation
॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ अस्ति गुह्यतमं विप्र सर्वभूतोपकारकम्। देव्यास्तु कवचं पुण्यं तच्छृणुष्व महामुने॥२॥
O great Brahmin, there is Devi Kavach (Armour of Goddess) which is most secret and useful to all beings. Please listen to that, O Great Sage.

प्रथमं शैलपुत्री च द्वितीयं ब्रह्मचारिणी। तृतीयं चन्द्रघण्टेति कूष्माण्डेति चतुर्थकम्॥३॥
The first form is SHAILAPUTRI- Daughter of the King of Himalayas; Second is BRAHMACHARINI One Who observes the state of celibacy; Third is CHANDRAGANTA- One Who bears the moon around Her neck; Fourth is KOOSHMANDA- Whose Void contains the Universe . -

पञ्चमं स्कन्दमातेति षष्ठं कात्यायनीति च। सप्तमं कालरात्रीति महागौरीति चाष्टमम्॥४॥
Fifth is SKANDAMATA- Who gave birth to Karttikeya; Sixth is KATYAYANI Who incarnated to help the Devas and was born in the hermitage of Sage Kathyayana; Seventh is KALARATRI; Eighth is MAHAGAURI- One Who made great penance.
english translation
नवमं सिद्धिदात्री च नव दुर्गाः प्रकीर्तिताः। उक्तान्येतानि नामानि ब्रह्मणैव महात्मना॥५॥
Ninth is SIDDHIDATRI- One Who grants Moksha. Durga is known by these Names. All these names have been establlished by omniscient Brahmh.
