एवं विप्रकृते लोके दैत्येन्द्रानुचरैर्मुहुः । दिवं देवाः परित्यज्य भुवि चेरुरलक्षिताः ।। ७-२-१६ ।।

sanskrit

Thus disturbed again and again by the unnatural occurrences caused by the followers of Hiraṇyakaśipu, all the people had to cease the activities of Vedic culture. Not receiving the results of yajña, the demigods also became disturbed. They left their residential quarters in the heavenly planets and, unobserved by the demons, began wandering on the planet earth to see the disasters. ।। 7-2-16 ।।

english translation

इस प्रकार हिरण्यकशिपु के अनुयायियों द्वारा बारम्बार अप्राकृतिक घटनाओं के रूप में सताये जाने पर सभी लोगों ने बाध्य होकर वैदिक संस्कृति की सारी गतिविधियाँ बन्द कर दीं। देवतागण भी यज्ञों का फल न पाने के कारण विचलित हो उठे। उन्होंने स्वर्गलोक के अपने- अपने आवास त्याग दिये और असुरों से अलक्षित होकर विनाश का अवलोकन करने के लिए वे पृथ्वीलोक में इधर-उधर विचरण करने लगे। ।। ७-२-१६ ।।

हिरण्यकशिपुर्भ्रातुः सम्परेतस्य दुःखितः । कृत्वा कटोदकादीनि भ्रातृपुत्रानसान्त्वयत् ।। ७-२-१७ ।।

sanskrit

After performing the ritualistic observances for the death of his brother, Hiraṇyakaśipu, being extremely unhappy, tried to pacify his nephews. ।। 7-2-17 ।।

english translation

अपने भाई की अन्त्येष्टि क्रिया सम्पन्न कर लेने के बाद हिरण्यकशिपु ने अत्यन्त दुखित होकर अपने भतीजों को सान्त्वना प्रदान करने का प्रयास किया। ।। ७-२-१७ ।।

शकुनिं शम्बरं धृष्टं भूतसन्तापनं वृकम् । कालनाभं महानाभं हरिश्मश्रुमथोत्कचम् ।। ७-२-१८ ।।

sanskrit

O King, Hiraṇyakaśipu was extremely angry, but since he was a great politician, he knew how to act according to the time and situation. With sweet words he began pacifying his nephews, whose names were Śakuni, Śambara, Dhṛṣṭi, Bhūtasantāpana, Vṛka, Kālanābha, Mahānābha, Hariśmaśru and Utkaca. ।। 7-2-18 ।।

english translation

हे राजा, हिरण्यकशिपु अत्यन्त क्रुद्ध था, किन्तु महान् राजनीतिज्ञ होने के कारण वह देश तथा काल के अनुसार कर्म करना जानता था। अतएव वह अपने भतीजों को मधुर वाणी से सान्त्वना देने लगा। इनके नाम थे शकुनि, शम्बर, धृष्टि, भूतसन्तापन, वृक, कालनाभ, महानाभ, हरिश्मश्रु तथा उत्कच। ।। ७-२-१८ ।।

तन्मातरं रुषाभानुं दितिं च जननीं गिरा । श्लक्ष्णया देशकालज्ञ इदमाह जनेश्वर ।। ७-२-१९ ।।

He also consoled their mother, his sister-in-law, Ruṣābhānu, as well as his own mother, Diti. He spoke to them all as follows. ।। 7-2-19 ।।

english translation

उसने उनकी माता अर्थात् अपनी अनुजवधू रुषाभानु एवं अपनी माता दिति को भी ढाढस बँधाया। वह उनसे इस प्रकार बोला। ।। ७-२-१९ ।।

tanmAtaraM ruSAbhAnuM ditiM ca jananIM girA | zlakSNayA dezakAlajJa idamAha janezvara || 7-2-19 ||

हिरण्यकशिपुरुवाच अम्बाम्ब हे वधूः पुत्रा वीरं मार्हथ शोचितुम् । रिपोरभिमुखे श्लाघ्यः शूराणां वध ईप्सितः ।। ७-२-२० ।।

sanskrit

Hiraṇyakaśipu said: My dear mother, sister-in-law and nephews, you should not lament for the death of the great hero, for a hero’s death in front of his enemy is glorious and desirable. ।। 7-2-20 ।।

english translation

हिरण्यकशिपु ने कहा : हे माता, हे वधू तथा हे भतीजो, तुम लोगों को महान् वीर की मृत्यु के लिए शोक नहीं करना चाहिए, क्योंकि अपने शत्रु के समक्ष वीर की मृत्यु अत्यन्त प्रशंसनीय तथा वांछनीय होती है। ।। ७-२-२० ।।
