धर्मार्थकाममोक्षाख्यं य इच्छेच्छ्रेय आत्मनः । एकमेव हरेस्तत्र कारणं पादसेवनम् ।। ४-८-४१ ।।

sanskrit

Any person who desires the fruits of the four principles religiosity, economic development, sense gratification and, at the end, liberation, should engage himself in the devotional service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, for worship of His lotus feet yields the fulfillment of all of these. ।। 4-8-41 ।।

english translation

जो व्यक्ति धर्म, अर्थ, काम तथा मोक्ष—इन चार पुरुषार्थों की कामना करता है उसे चाहिए कि पूर्ण पुरुषोत्तम भगवान् की भक्ति में अपने आपको लगाए, क्योंकि उनके चरणकमलों की पूजा से इन सबकी पूर्ति होती है। ।। ४-८-४१ ।।

My dear boy, I therefore wish all good fortune for you. You should go to the bank of the Yamunā, where there is a virtuous forest named Madhuvana, and there be purified. Just by going there, one draws nearer to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who always lives there. ।। 4-8-42 ।।

english translation

हे बालक, तुम्हारा कल्याण हो। तुम यमुना के तट पर जाओ, जहाँ पर मधुवन नामक विख्यात जंगल है और वहीं पर पवित्र होओ। वहाँ जाने से ही मनुष्य वृन्दावनवासी भगवान् के निकट पहुँचता है। ।। ४-८-४२ ।।

Nārada Muni instructed: My dear boy, in the waters of the Yamunā River, which is known as Kālindī, you should take three baths daily because the water is very auspicious, sacred and clear. After bathing, you should perform the necessary regulative principles for aṣṭāṅga-yoga and then sit down on your āsana [sitting place] in a calm and quiet position. ।। 4-8-43 ।।

english translation

नारद मुनि ने उपदेश दिया : हे बालक, यमुना नदी अथवा कालिन्दी के जल में तुम नित्य तीन बार स्नान करना, क्योंकि यह जल शुभ, पवित्र एवं स्वच्छ है। स्नान के पश्चात् अष्टांगयोग के आवश्यक अनुष्ठान करना और तब शान्त मुद्रा में अपने आसन पर बैठ जाना। ।। ४-८-४३ ।।

After sitting on your seat, practice the three kinds of breathing exercises, and thus gradually control the life air, the mind and the senses. Completely free yourself from all material contamination, and with great patience begin to meditate on the Supreme Personality of Godhead. ।। 4-8-44 ।।

english translation

आसन ग्रहण करने के पश्चात् तुम तीन प्रकार के प्राणायाम करना और इस प्रकार धीरे-धीरे प्राणवायु, मन तथा इन्द्रियों को वश में करना। अपने को समस्त भौतिक कल्मष से मुक्त करके तुम अत्यन्त धैर्यपूर्वक भगवान् का ध्यान प्रारम्भ करना। ।। ४-८-४४ ।।

[The form of the Lord is described herein.] The Lord’s face is perpetually very beautiful and pleasing in attitude. To the devotees who see Him, He appears never to be displeased, and He is always prepared to award benedictions to them. His eyes, His nicely decorated eyebrows, His raised nose and His broad forehead are all very beautiful. He is more beautiful than all the demigods. ।। 4-8-45 ।।

english translation

[यहाँ पर भगवान् के रूप का वर्णन हुआ है।] भगवान् का मुख सदैव अत्यन्त सुन्दर और प्रसन्न मुद्रा में रहता है। देखने वाले भक्तों को वे कभी अप्रसन्न नहीं दिखते और वे सदैव उन्हें वरदान देने के लिए उद्यत रहते हैं। उनके नेत्र, सुसज्जित भौंहें, उन्नत नासिका तथा चौड़ा मस्तक—ये सभी अत्यन्त सुन्दर हैं। वे समस्त देवताओं से अधिक सुन्दर हैं। ।। ४-८-४५ ।।
