यदाऽऽत्मानमविज्ञाय भगवन्तं परं गुरुम् । पुरुषस्तु विषज्जेत गुणेषु प्रकृतेः स्वदृक् ।। ४-२९-२६ ।।

sanskrit

The living entity by nature has minute independence to choose his own good or bad fortune, but when he forgets his supreme master, the Personality of Godhead, he gives himself up unto the modes of material nature. ।। 4-29-26 ।।

english translation

जीव की यह प्रकृति है कि उसे अपना अच्छा या बुरा भाग्य चुनने की कुछ-कुछ छूट है, किन्तु जब वह अपने परम स्वामी भगवान् को भुला देता है, तो वह अपने को प्रकृति के गुणों के हवाले कर देता है। ।। ४-२९-२६ ।।

गुणाभिमानी स तदा कर्माणि कुरुतेऽवशः । शुक्लं कृष्णं लोहितं वा यथा कर्माभिजायते ।। ४-२९-२७ ।।

sanskrit

He identifies himself with the body and, for the interest of the body, becomes attached to various activities. Sometimes he is under the influence of the mode of ignorance, sometimes the mode of passion and sometimes the mode of goodness. The living entity thus gets different types of bodies under the modes of material nature. ।। 4-29-27 ।।

english translation

इस तरह प्रकृति के गुणों के वशीभूत होकर वह अपने को शरीर मान बैठता है। कभी वह तमोगुण, तो कभी रजोगुण और कभी सतोगुण के अधीन होता है। इस प्रकार जीव प्रकृति के गुणों के अधीन रह कर विभिन्न प्रकार के शरीर प्राप्त करता है। ।। ४-२९-२७ ।।

शुक्लात्प्रकाशभूयिष्ठान् लोकानाप्नोति कर्हिचित् । दुःखोदर्कान् क्रियायासांस्तमः शोकोत्कटान् क्वचित् ।। ४-२९-२८ ।।

Those who are situated in the mode of goodness act piously according to Vedic injunctions. Thus they are elevated to the higher planetary systems where the demigods live. Those who are influenced by the mode of passion engage in various types of productive activities in the planetary systems where human beings live. Similarly, those influenced by the mode of darkness are subjected to various types of misery and live in the animal kingdom. ।। 4-29-28 ।।

english translation

जो सतोगुणी हैं, वे वैदिक आदेशों के अनुसार पुण्यकर्म करते हैं और इस तरह वे उच्चलोकों को जाते हैं जहाँ देवों का निवास है। जो रजोगुणी हैं, वे मनुष्य लोक में विभिन्न प्रकार के उत्पादक काम करते हैं। इसी प्रकार तमोगुणी पुरुष विभिन्न प्रकार के कष्ट उठाते हैं और पशु जगत में वास करते हैं। ।। ४-२९-२८ ।।

क्वचित्पुमान् क्वचिच्च स्त्री क्वचिन्नोभयमन्धधीः । देवो मनुष्यस्तिर्यग्वा यथा कर्मगुणं भवः ।। ४-२९-२९ ।।

Covered by the mode of ignorance in material nature, the living entity is sometimes a male, sometimes a female, sometimes a eunuch, sometimes a human being, sometimes a demigod, sometimes a bird, an animal, and so on. In this way he is wandering within the material world. His acceptance of different types of bodies is brought about by his activities under the influence of the modes of nature. ।। 4-29-29 ।।

english translation

भौतिक प्रकृति के तमोगुण से आच्छादित होकर जीवात्मा कभी नर, कभी नारी, कभी नपुंसक, कभी मनुष्य, कभी देवता, कभी पक्षी, पशु इत्यादि बनता है। इस प्रकार वह इस भौतिक जगत में घूमता रहता है। वह प्रकृति के गुणों के अधीन अपने कर्मों के कारण विभिन्न प्रकार के शरीर स्वीकार करता रहता है। ।। ४-२९-२९ ।।

क्षुत्परीतो यथा दीनः सारमेयो गृहं गृहम् । चरन् विन्दति यद्दिष्टं दण्डमोदनमेव वा ।। ४-२९-३० ।।

sanskrit

The living entity is exactly like a dog who, overcome with hunger, goes from door to door for some food. According to his destiny, he sometimes receives punishment and is driven out and at other times receives a little food to eat. ।। 4-29-30 ।।

english translation

यह जीव ठीक उस कुत्ते के तुल्य है, जो भूख से परेशान भोजन पाने के लिए द्वार-द्वार जाता है। अपने प्रारब्ध के अनुसार वह कभी दण्ड पाता है और खदेड़ दिया जाता है, अथवा कभी- कभी खाने को थोड़ा भोजन भी पा जाता है। ।। ४-२९-३० ।।
