मैत्रेय उवाच मौक्तिकैः कुसुमस्रग्भिर्दुकूलैः स्वर्णतोरणैः । महासुरभिभिर्धूपैर्मण्डितं तत्र तत्र वै ॥ ४-२१-१ ॥
The great sage Maitreya told Vidura: When the King entered his city, it was very beautifully decorated to receive him with pearls, flower garlands, beautiful cloth and golden gates, and the entire city was perfumed with highly fragrant incense. ॥ 4-21-1 ॥

महर्षि मैत्रेय ने विदुर से कहा : जब राजा ने अपनी नगरी में प्रवेश किया, तो उसके स्वागत के लिए नगरी को मोतियों, पुष्पहारों, सुन्दर वस्त्रों तथा सुनहरे द्वारों से सुन्दर ढंग से सजाया गया था और सारी नगरी अत्यन्त सुगन्धित धूप से सुवासित थी। ॥ ४-२१-१ ॥

hk transliteration by Sanscriptचन्दनागुरुतोयार्द्ररथ्याचत्वरमार्गवत् । पुष्पाक्षतफलैस्तोक्मैर्लाजैरर्चिर्भिरर्चितम् ॥ ४-२१-२ ॥
Fragrant water distilled from sandalwood and aguru herb was sprinkled everywhere on the lanes, roads and small parks throughout the city, and everywhere were decorations of unbroken fruits, flowers, wetted grains, varied minerals, and lamps, all presented as auspicious paraphernalia. ॥ 4-21-2 ॥

नगर भर की गलियाँ, सडक़ें तथा छोटे पार्क चन्दन तथा अरगजा के सुगन्धित जल से सींच दिये गये थे और सर्वत्र समूचे फलों, फूलों, भीगोए हुए अन्नों, विविध खनिजों तथा दीपों के अलंकरणों से सजे थे। सभी मांगलिक वस्तुओं के दृश्य उपस्थित कर रहे थे। ॥ ४-२१-२ ॥

hk transliteration by Sanscriptसवृन्दैः कदलीस्तम्भैः पूगपोतैः परिष्कृतम् । तरुपल्लवमालाभिः सर्वतः समलङ्कृतम् ॥ ४-२१-३ ॥
At the street crossings there were bunches of fruits and flowers, as well as pillars of banana trees and betel nut branches. All these combined decorations everywhere looked very attractive. ॥ 4-21-3 ॥

चौराहों पर फलों तथा फूलों के गुच्छे एवं केले के ख भे तथा सुपारी की टहनियाँ लगाई गई थी। यह सारी सजावट मिलकर अत्यन्त आकर्षक लग रही थी। ॥ ४-२१-३ ॥

hk transliteration by Sanscriptप्रजास्तं दीपबलिभिः सम्भृताशेषमङ्गलैः । अभीयुर्मृष्टकन्याश्च मृष्टकुण्डलमण्डिताः ॥ ४-२१-४ ॥
As the King entered the gate of the city, all the citizens received him with many auspicious articles like lamps, flowers and yogurt. The King was also received by many beautiful unmarried girls whose bodies were bedecked with various ornaments, especially with earrings which collided with one another. ॥ 4-21-4 ॥

जब राजा ने नगर में प्रवेश किया, तो समस्त नागरिकों ने दीप, पुष्प तथा दधि जैसे अनेक मांगलिक द्रव्यों से उनका स्वागत किया। राजा की अगवानी अनेक सुन्दर कन्याओं ने भी की जिनके शरीर विविध आभूषणों से सुशोभित थे और जिनके कुण्डल परस्पर टकरा रहे थे। ॥ ४-२१-४ ॥

hk transliteration by Sanscriptशङ्खदुन्दुभिघोषेण ब्रह्मघोषेण चर्त्विजाम् । विवेश भवनं वीरः स्तूयमानो गतस्मयः ॥ ४-२१-५ ॥
When the King entered the palace, conchshells and kettledrums were sounded, priests chanted Vedic mantras, and professional reciters offered different prayers. But in spite of all this ceremony to welcome him, the King was not the least bit affected. ॥ 4-21-5 ॥
english translation
जब राजा ने महल में प्रवेश किया, तो शंख तथा दुन्दुभियाँ बजने लगीं, पुरोहित-गण वैदिक मंत्रों का उच्चारण करने लगे और बन्दीजन विभिन्न प्रकार से स्तुतिगान करने लगे। किन्तु इतने स्वागत-समारोह के बावजूद राजा पर रञ्चमात्र भी प्रभाव नहीं पड़ा। ॥ ४-२१-५ ॥
