विष्णुर्विरिञ्चो गिरिश इन्द्रो वायुर्यमो रविः । पर्जन्यो धनदः सोमः क्षितिरग्निरपाम्पतिः ।। ४-१४-२६ ।।

sanskrit

Lord Viṣṇu; Lord Brahmā; Lord Śiva; Lord Indra; Vāyu, the master of air; Yama, the superintendent of death; the sun-god; the director of rainfall; Kuvera, the treasurer; the moon-god; the predominating deity of the earth; Agni, the fire-god; Varuṇa, the lord of waters; ।। 4-14-26 ।।

english translation

विष्णु, ब्रह्मा, शिव, इन्द्र, वायु, यम, सूर्यदेव, पर्जन्य, कुबेर, चन्द्रदेव, क्षितिदेव, अग्नि देव, वरुण ।। ४-१४-२६ ।।

viSNurviriJco giriza indro vAyuryamo raviH | parjanyo dhanadaH somaH kSitiragnirapAmpatiH || 4-14-26 ||

एते चान्ये च विबुधाः प्रभवो वरशापयोः । देहे भवन्ति नृपतेः सर्वदेवमयो नृपः ।। ४-१४-२७ ।।

sanskrit

And all others who are great and competent to bestow benedictions or to curse — all abide in the body of the king. For this reason the king is known as the reservoir of all demigods, who are simply parts and parcels of the king’s body. ।। 4-14-27 ।।

english translation

तथा अन्य बड़े-बड़े देवता जो आशीर्वाद या शाप दे सकने में समर्थ हैं, वे सब राजा के शरीर में वास करते हैं। इसीलिए राजा सभी देवताओं का आगार माना जाता है। देवता राजा के शरीर के भिन्नांश हैं। ‌ ।। ४-१४-२७ ।।

तस्मान्मां कर्मभिर्विप्रा यजध्वं गतमत्सराः । बलिं च मह्यं हरत मत्तोऽन्यः कोऽग्रभुक् पुमान् ।। ४-१४-२८ ।।

sanskrit

King Vena continued: For this reason, O brāhmaṇas, you should abandon your envy of me, and by your ritualistic activities you should worship me and offer me all paraphernalia. If you are intelligent, you should know that there is no personality superior to me who can accept the first oblations of all sacrifices. ।। 4-14-28 ।।

english translation

राजा वेन ने आगे कहा : इसलिए, हे ब्राह्मणो, तुम मेरे प्रति ईर्ष्या त्याग कर अपने अनुष्ठान कार्यों द्वारा मेरी पूजा करो और समस्त पूजा-सामग्री मुझ पर ही चढ़ाओ। यदि तुम लोग भी बुद्धिमान होगे, तो समझ सकोगे कि मुझसे श्रेष्ठ ऐसा कोई पुरुष नहीं जो समस्त यज्ञों की प्रथम आहुतियों को ग्रहण कर सके। ।। ४-१४-२८ ।।

tasmAnmAM karmabhirviprA yajadhvaM gatamatsarAH | baliM ca mahyaM harata matto'nyaH ko'grabhuk pumAn || 4-14-28 ||

मैत्रेय उवाच इत्थं विपर्ययमतिः पापीयानुत्पथं गतः । अनुनीयमानस्तद्याच्ञां न चक्रे भ्रष्टमङ्गलः ।। ४-१४-२९ ।।

sanskrit

The great sage Maitreya continued: Thus the King, who became unintelligent due to his sinful life and deviation from the right path, became actually bereft of all good fortune. He could not accept the requests of the great sages, which the sages put before him with great respect, and therefore he was condemned. ।। 4-14-29 ।।

english translation

महर्षि मैत्रेय ने आगे कहा : इस प्रकार अपने पापमय जीवन के कारण दुर्बोध होने तथा सही राह से विचलित होने के कारण राजा समस्त पुण्य से क्षीण हो गया। उसने ऋषियों की सादर प्रस्तुत प्रार्थनाएँ स्वीकार नहीं कीं, अत: उसकी भर्त्सना की गई। ।। ४-१४-२९ ।।

इति तेऽसत्कृतास्तेन द्विजाः पण्डितमानिना । भग्नायां भव्ययाच्ञायां तस्मै विदुर चुक्रुधुः ।। ४-१४-३० ।।

My dear Vidura, all good fortune unto you. The foolish King, who thought himself very learned, thus insulted the great sages, and the sages, being brokenhearted by the King’s words, became very angry at him. ।। 4-14-30 ।।

english translation

हे विदुर, तुम्हारा कल्याण हो। उस मूर्ख राजा ने अपने को अत्यन्त विद्वान् समझकर ऋषियों तथा मुनियों का अपमान किया। राजा के वचनों से ऋषियों दिल टूट गया और वे उस पर अत्यन्त क्रुद्ध हुए। ।। ४-१४-३० ।।
