दध्मौ शङ्खं बृहद्बाहुः खं दिशश्चानुनादयन् । येनोद्विग्नदृशः क्षत्तरुपदेव्योऽत्रसन् भृशम् ।। ४-१०-६ ।।

sanskrit

Maitreya continued: My dear Vidura, as soon as Dhruva Mahārāja reached Alakāpurī, he immediately blew his conchshell, and the sound reverberated throughout the entire sky and in every direction. The wives of the Yakṣas became very much frightened. From their eyes it was apparent that they were full of anxiety. ।। 4-10-6 ।।

english translation

मैत्रेय ने आगे कहा : हे विदुर, जैसे ही ध्रुव महाराज अलकापुरी पहुँचे, उन्होंने तुरन्त अपना शंख बजाया जिसकी ध्वनि सम्पूर्ण आकाश तथा प्रत्येक दिशा में गूँजने लगी। यक्षों की पत्नियाँ अत्यन्त भयभीत हो उठीं। उनके नेत्रों से प्रकट हो रहा था कि वे चिन्ता से परिपूर्ण थीं। ।। ४-१०-६ ।।

ततो निष्क्रम्य बलिन उपदेवमहाभटाः । असहन्तस्तन्निनादमभिपेतुरुदायुधाः ।। ४-१०-७ ।।

sanskrit

O hero Vidura, the greatly powerful heroes of the Yakṣas, unable to tolerate the resounding vibration of the conchshell of Dhruva Mahārāja, came forth from their city with weapons and attacked Dhruva. ।। 4-10-7 ।।

english translation

हे वीर विदुर, ध्रुव महाराज के शंख की गूँजती ध्वनि को सहन न कर सकने के कारण यक्षों के महा-शक्तिशाली सैनिक अपने-अपने अस्त्र-शस्त्र लेकर अपनी नगरी से बाहर निकल आये और उन्होंने ध्रुव पर धावा बोल दिया। ।। ४-१०-७ ।।

स तानापततो वीर उग्रधन्वा महारथः । एकैकं युगपत्सर्वानहन् बाणैस्त्रिभिस्त्रिभिः ।। ४-१०-८ ।।

sanskrit

Dhruva Mahārāja, who was a great charioteer and certainly a great bowman also, immediately began to kill them by simultaneously discharging arrows three at a time. ।। 4-10-8 ।।

english translation

ध्रुव महाराज, जो महारथी तथा निश्चय ही महान् धनुर्धर भी थे, तुरन्त ही एकसाथ तीन-तीन बाण छोड़ करके उन्हें मारने लगे। ।। ४-१०-८ ।।

ते वै ललाटलग्नैस्तैरिषुभिः सर्व एव हि । मत्वा निरस्तमात्मानमाशंसन् कर्म तस्य तत् ।। ४-१०-९ ।।

sanskrit

When the heroes of the Yakṣas saw that all their heads were being thus threatened by Dhruva Mahārāja, they could very easily understand their awkward position, and they concluded that they would certainly be defeated. But, as heroes, they lauded the action of Dhruva. ।। 4-10-9 ।।

english translation

जब यक्ष वीरों ने देखा कि उनके शिरों पर ध्रुव महाराज द्वारा बाण-वर्षा की जा रही है, तो उन्हें अपनी विषम स्थिति का पता चला और उन्होंने यह समझ लिया कि उनकी हार निश्चित है। किन्तु वीर होने के नाते उन्होंने ध्रुव के कार्य की सराहना की। ।। ४-१०-९ ।।

तेऽपि चामुममृष्यन्तः पादस्पर्शमिवोरगाः । शरैरविध्यन् युगपद्द्विगुणं प्रचिकीर्षवः ।। ४-१०-१० ।।

sanskrit

Just like serpents, who cannot tolerate being trampled upon by anyone’s feet, the Yakṣas, being intolerant of the wonderful prowess of Dhruva Mahārāja, threw twice as many arrows — six from each of their soldiers — and thus they very valiantly exhibited their prowess. ।। 4-10-10 ।।

english translation

जिस प्रकार सर्प किसी के पाँव द्वारा कुचले जाने को सहन नहीं कर पाते, उसी प्रकार यक्ष भी ध्रुव महाराज के आश्चर्यजनक पराक्रम को न सह सकने के कारण, उन पर एक साथ उनसे दुगुने बाण—अर्थात् प्रत्येक सैनिक छह-छह बाण—छोडऩे लगे और इस प्रकार उन्होंने अपनी शूरवीरता का बड़ी बहादुरी से प्रदर्शन किया। ।। ४-१०-१० ।।
