खराश्च कर्कशैः क्षत्तः खुरैर्घ्नन्तो धरातलम् । खार्काररभसा मत्ताः पर्यधावन् वरूथशः ॥ ३-१७-११ ॥
O Vidura, the asses ran hither and thither in herds, striking the earth with their hard hooves and wildly braying. ॥ 3-17-11 ॥

हे विदुर, झुंड के झुंड गधे अपने कठोर खुरों से पृथ्वी पर प्रहार करते हुए तथा जोर जोर से रेंकते हुए इधर उधर दौडऩे लगे। ॥ ३-१७-११ ॥

रुदन्तो रासभत्रस्ता नीडादुदपतन् खगाः । घोषेऽरण्ये च पशवः शकृन्मूत्रमकुर्वत ॥ ३-१७-१२ ॥
Frightened by the braying of the asses, birds flew shrieking from their nests, while cattle in the cowsheds as well as in the woods passed dung and urine. ॥ 3-17-12 ॥

गधों के रेंकने से भयभीत होकर पक्षी अपने घोसलों से निकलकर चीख चीख कर उडऩे लगे और गोशालाओं तथा जंगलों में पशु मल-मूत्र त्यागने लगे। ॥ ३-१७-१२ ॥

गावोऽत्रसन्नसृग्दोहास्तोयदाः पूयवर्षिणः । व्यरुदन् देवलिङ्गानि द्रुमाः पेतुर्विनानिलम् ॥ ३-१७-१३ ॥
Cows, terrified, yielded blood in place of milk, clouds rained pus, the images of the gods in the temples shed tears, and trees fell down without a blast of wind. ॥ 3-17-13 ॥

भयभीत होने के कारण गौवें दूध के स्थान पर रक्त देने लगीं, बादलों से पीब बरसने लगा, मन्दिरों में देवों के विग्रहों से आँसू निकलने लगे और वृक्ष बिना आँधी के ही गिरने लगे। ॥ ३-१७-१३ ॥

ग्रहान् पुण्यतमानन्ये भगणांश्चापि दीपिताः । अतिचेरुर्वक्रगत्या युयुधुश्च परस्परम् ॥ ३-१७-१४ ॥
Ominous planets such as Mars and Saturn shone brighter and surpassed the auspicious ones such as Mercury, Jupiter and Venus as well as a number of lunar mansions. Taking seemingly retrograde courses, the planets came in conflict with one another. ॥ 3-17-14 ॥

मंगल तथा शनि जैसे क्रूर ग्रह बृहस्पति, शुक्र तथा अनेक शुभ नक्षत्रों को लाँघकर तेजी से चमकने लगे। टेढ़े मेढ़े रास्तों में घूमने के कारण ग्रहों में परस्पर टक्कर होने लगी। ॥ ३-१७-१४ ॥

दृष्ट्वान्यांश्च महोत्पातानतत्तत्त्वविदः प्रजाः । ब्रह्मपुत्रान् ऋते भीता मेनिरे विश्वसम्प्लवम् ॥ ३-१७-१५ ॥
Marking these and many other omens of evil times, everyone but the four sage sons of Brahmā, who were aware of the fall of Jaya and Vijaya and of their birth as Diti’s sons, was seized with fear. They did not know the secrets of these portents and thought that the dissolution of the universe was at hand. ॥ 3-17-15 ॥

इस प्रकार के तथा अन्य अनेक अपशकुनों को देखकर ब्रह्मा के चारों ऋषि-पुत्र, जिन्हें जय तथा विजय के पतन एवं दिति के पुत्रों के रूप में जन्म लेने का ज्ञान था, उनके अतिरिक्त सभी लोग भयभीत हो उठे। उन्हें इन उत्पातों के मर्म का पता न था और वे सोच रहे थे कि ब्रह्माण्ड का प्रलय होने वाला है। ॥ ३-१७-१५ ॥
