चरा ऊचुः ।। देवो वाऽथ ऋषिश्चैव सूर्यो वाथ विभावसुः ।। तपश्चरति देवेश न जानीमो वने च तम् ।। ३६ ।।

sanskrit

Indra’s spies said:— O lord of gods, we do not know who it is. Some one is performing a penance in the forest, a god, a sage, the sun or the fire.

english translation

carA UcuH || devo vA'tha RSizcaiva sUryo vAtha vibhAvasuH || tapazcarati deveza na jAnImo vane ca tam || 36 ||

तस्यैव तेजसा दग्धा आगतास्तव सन्निधौ ।। निवेदितञ्चरित्रं तत्क्रियतामुचितन्तु यत् ।। ३७ ।।

We are scorched by his splendour and have come near you. We have told you the details. Please do what is proper.

tasyaiva tejasA dagdhA AgatAstava sannidhau || niveditaJcaritraM tatkriyatAmucitantu yat || 37 ||

नन्दीश्वर उवाच।। इत्युक्तस्तैश्चरैस्सर्वं ज्ञात्वा पुत्रचिकीर्षितम् ।। सगोत्रपान्विसृज्यैव तत्र गन्तुं मनो दधे ।। ३८ ।।

sanskrit

Nandīśvara said:— Thus informed by the spies, Indra, the enemy of mountains, understood whatever his son Arjuna desired to do. He dismissed them and decided to go there to test him.

nandIzvara uvAca|| ityuktastaizcaraissarvaM jJAtvA putracikIrSitam || sagotrapAnvisRjyaiva tatra gantuM mano dadhe || 38 ||

स वृद्धब्राह्मणो भूत्वा ब्रह्मचारी शचीपतिः ।। जगाम तत्र विप्रेन्द्र परीक्षार्थं हि तस्य वै ।। ३९।।

sanskrit

O leading brahmin, Indra, the lord of Śacī, assumed the form of an elderly brahmin bachelor and went there to test him.

english translation

sa vRddhabrAhmaNo bhUtvA brahmacArI zacIpatiH || jagAma tatra viprendra parIkSArthaM hi tasya vai || 39||

तमागतन्तदा दृष्ट्वाकार्षीत्पूजाश्च पाण्डवः।। स्थितोग्रे च स्तुतिं कृत्वा क्वायातोसि वदाधुना ।। ४० ।।

On seeing him come, Arjuna worshipped him. After eulogising him he stood in front of him and said—“Whence do you come now? Please tell me”

tamAgatantadA dRSTvAkArSItpUjAzca pANDavaH|| sthitogre ca stutiM kRtvA kvAyAtosi vadAdhunA || 40 ||
