नन्दीश्वर उवाच ॥ शृणु तात महाप्राज्ञ विधिकामप्रपूरकम् ॥ अर्द्धनारीनराख्यं हि शिवरूपमनुत्तमम् ॥ १ ॥
Nandīśvara said:— O dear one of great intellect, please listen to the description of Śiva’s form half-male and half-female,[1] than which there is nothing more excellent and which completes the work of the Creator.
english translation
यदा सृष्टाः प्रजा सर्वाः न व्यवर्द्धंत वेधसा ॥ तदा चिंताकुलोऽभूत्स तेन दुःखेन दुखितः ॥ २ ॥
When the subjects created by the Creator did not multiply, he was very much distressed and worried.
english translation
नभोवाणी तदाभूद्वै सृष्टिं मिथुनजां कुरु ॥ तच्छ्रुत्वा मैथुनीं सृष्टिं ब्रह्मा कर्तुममन्यत ॥ ३ ॥
Then a celestial voice said—“Carry on the creation produced by couples.” On hearing it, Brahmā pondered over the creation produced by couples in order to carry it out.
english translation
नारीणां कुलमीशानान्निर्गतं न पुरा यतः ॥ ततो मैथुनजां सृष्टिं कर्तुं शेके न पद्मभूः ॥ ४ ॥
Since no generation of women had formerly come out of Iśāna, the lotus-born deity (Brahmā) was unable to produce the creation by means of copulation.
english translation
प्रभावेण विना शंभोर्न जायेरन्निमाः प्रजाः ॥ एवं संचिन्तयन्ब्रह्मा तपः कर्त्तुं प्रचक्रमे ॥ ५ ॥
Brahmā then began to perform penance thinking “Without the power of Śiva, the subjects will not be born.”
