नन्दीश्वर उवाच ॥ शृणु तात महाप्राज्ञ विधिकामप्रपूरकम् ॥ अर्द्धनारीनराख्यं हि शिवरूपमनुत्तमम् ॥ १ ॥
Nandīśvara said:— O dear one of great intellect, please listen to the description of Śiva’s form half-male and half-female,॥ 1॥ than which there is nothing more excellent and which completes the work of the Creator.
english translation
nandIzvara uvAca ॥ zRNu tAta mahAprAjJa vidhikAmaprapUrakam ॥ arddhanArInarAkhyaM hi zivarUpamanuttamam ॥ 1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयदा सृष्टाः प्रजा सर्वाः न व्यवर्द्धंत वेधसा ॥ तदा चिंताकुलोऽभूत्स तेन दुःखेन दुखितः ॥ २ ॥
When the subjects created by the Creator did not multiply, he was very much distressed and worried.
english translation
yadA sRSTAH prajA sarvAH na vyavarddhaMta vedhasA ॥ tadA ciMtAkulo'bhUtsa tena duHkhena dukhitaH ॥ 2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptनभोवाणी तदाभूद्वै सृष्टिं मिथुनजां कुरु ॥ तच्छ्रुत्वा मैथुनीं सृष्टिं ब्रह्मा कर्तुममन्यत ॥ ३ ॥
Then a celestial voice said—“Carry on the creation produced by couples.” On hearing it, Brahmā pondered over the creation produced by couples in order to carry it out.
english translation
nabhovANI tadAbhUdvai sRSTiM mithunajAM kuru ॥ tacchrutvA maithunIM sRSTiM brahmA kartumamanyata ॥ 3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptनारीणां कुलमीशानान्निर्गतं न पुरा यतः ॥ ततो मैथुनजां सृष्टिं कर्तुं शेके न पद्मभूः ॥ ४ ॥
Since no generation of women had formerly come out of Iśāna, the lotus-born deity (Brahmā) was unable to produce the creation by means of copulation.
english translation
nArINAM kulamIzAnAnnirgataM na purA yataH ॥ tato maithunajAM sRSTiM kartuM zeke na padmabhUH ॥ 4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptप्रभावेण विना शंभोर्न जायेरन्निमाः प्रजाः ॥ एवं संचिन्तयन्ब्रह्मा तपः कर्त्तुं प्रचक्रमे ॥ ५ ॥
Brahmā then began to perform penance thinking “Without the power of Śiva, the subjects will not be born.”

prabhAveNa vinA zaMbhorna jAyerannimAH prajAH ॥ evaM saMcintayanbrahmA tapaH karttuM pracakrame ॥ 5 ॥
