    विदुर उवाच प्रजापतिपतिः सृष्ट्वा प्रजासर्गे प्रजापतीन् । किमारभत मे ब्रह्मन् प्रब्रूह्यव्यक्तमार्गवित् ॥ ३-२०-९ ॥vidura uvAca prajApatipatiH sRSTvA prajAsarge prajApatIn । kimArabhata me brahman prabrUhyavyaktamArgavit ॥ 3-20-9 ॥ Vidura said: Since you know of matters inconceivable to us, tell me, O holy sage, what did Brahmā do to create living beings after evolving the Prajāpatis, the progenitors of living beings? ।। 3-20-9 ।।

    करालदंष्ट्रश्चक्षुर्भ्यां सञ्चक्षाणो दहन्निव । अभिप्लुत्य स्वगदया हतोऽसीत्याहनद्धरिम् ॥ ३-१९-८ ॥karAladaMSTrazcakSurbhyAM saJcakSANo dahanniva । abhiplutya svagadayA hato'sItyAhanaddharim ॥ 3-19-8 ॥The demon, who had fearful tusks, stared at the Personality of Godhead as though to burn Him. Springing into the air, he aimed his mace at the Lord, exclaiming at the same time, “You are slain!” ।। 3-19-8 ।।

    स तं निशाम्यात्तरथाङ्गमग्रतो व्यवस्थितं पद्मपलाशलोचनम् । विलोक्य चामर्षपरिप्लुतेन्द्रियो रुषा स्वदन्तच्छदमादशच्छ्वसन् ॥ ३-१९-७ ॥sa taM nizAmyAttarathAGgamagrato vyavasthitaM padmapalAzalocanam । vilokya cAmarSapariplutendriyo ruSA svadantacchadamAdazacchvasan ॥ 3-19-7 ॥When the demon saw the Personality of Godhead, who had eyes just like lotus petals, standing in position before him, armed with His Sudarśana discus, his senses were overpowered by indignation. He began to hiss like a serpent, and he bit his lip in great resentment. ।। 3-19-7 ।।

    सूत उवाच हरेर्धृतक्रोडतनोः स्वमायया निशम्य गोरुद्धरणं रसातलात् । लीलां हिरण्याक्षमवज्ञया हतं सञ्जातहर्षो मुनिमाह भारतः ॥ ३-२०-८ ॥sUta uvAca harerdhRtakroDatanoH svamAyayA nizamya goruddharaNaM rasAtalAt । lIlAM hiraNyAkSamavajJayA hataM saJjAtaharSo munimAha bhArataH ॥ 3-20-8 ॥ Sūta Gosvāmī continued: Vidura, the descendant of Bharata, was delighted to hear the story of the Lord, who, having assumed by His own divine potency the form of a boar, had enacted the sport of lifting the earth from the bottom of the ocean and indifferently killing the demon Hiraṇyākṣa. Vidura then spoke to the sage as follows. ।। 3-20-8 ।।

    तं व्यग्रचक्रं दितिपुत्राधमेन स्वपार्षदमुख्येन विषज्जमानम् । चित्रा वाचोऽतद्विदां खेचराणां तत्र स्मासन् स्वस्ति तेऽमुं जहीति ॥ ३-१९-६ ॥taM vyagracakraM ditiputrAdhamena svapArSadamukhyena viSajjamAnam । citrA vAco'tadvidAM khecarANAM tatra smAsan svasti te'muM jahIti ॥ 3-19-6 ॥As the discus began to revolve in the Lord’s hands and the Lord contended at close quarters with the chief of His Vaikuṇṭha attendants, who had been born as Hiraṇyākṣa, a vile son of Diti, there issued from every direction strange expressions uttered by those who were witnessing from airplanes. They had no knowledge of the Lord’s reality, and they cried, “May victory attend You! Pray dispatch him. Play no more with him.” ।। 3-19-6 ।।

    गदायामपविद्धायां हाहाकारे विनिर्गते । मानयामास तद्धर्मं सुनाभं चास्मरद्विभुः ॥ ३-१९-५ ॥gadAyAmapaviddhAyAM hAhAkAre vinirgate । mAnayAmAsa taddharmaM sunAbhaM cAsmaradvibhuH ॥ 3-19-5 ॥As the Lord’s mace fell to the ground and a cry of alarm arose from the witnessing crowd of gods and ṛṣis, the Personality of Godhead acknowledged the demon’s love of righteousness and therefore invoked His Sudarśana discus. ।। 3-19-5 ।।

    ता नः कीर्तय भद्रं ते कीर्तन्योदारकर्मणः । रसज्ञः को नु तृप्येत हरिलीलामृतं पिबन् ॥ ३-२०-६ ॥tA naH kIrtaya bhadraM te kIrtanyodArakarmaNaH । rasajJaH ko nu tRpyeta harilIlAmRtaM piban ॥ 3-20-6 ॥ O Sūta Gosvāmī, all good fortune to you! Please narrate the activities of the Lord, which are all magnanimous and worth glorifying. What sort of devotee can be satiated by hearing the nectarean pastimes of the Lord? ।। 3-20-6 ।।

    स तदा लब्धतीर्थोऽपि न बबाधे निरायुधम् । मानयन् स मृधे धर्मं विष्वक्सेनं प्रकोपयन् ॥ ३-१९-४ ॥sa tadA labdhatIrtho'pi na babAdhe nirAyudham । mAnayan sa mRdhe dharmaM viSvaksenaM prakopayan ॥ 3-19-4 ॥Even though the demon had an excellent opportunity to strike his unarmed foe without obstruction, he respected the law of single combat, thereby kindling the fury of the Supreme Lord. ।। 3-19-4 ।।

    सा हता तेन गदया विहता भगवत्करात् । विघूर्णितापतद्रेजे तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥ ३-१९-३ ॥sA hatA tena gadayA vihatA bhagavatkarAt । vighUrNitApatadreje tadadbhutamivAbhavat ॥ 3-19-3 ॥Struck by the demon’s mace, however, the Lord’s mace slipped from His hand and looked splendid as it fell down whirling. This was miraculous, for the mace was blazing wonderfully. ।। 3-19-3 ।।

    तयोः संवदतोः सूत प्रवृत्ता ह्यमलाः कथाः । आपो गाङ्गा इवाघघ्नीर्हरेः पादाम्बुजाश्रयाः ॥ ३-२०-५ ॥tayoH saMvadatoH sUta pravRttA hyamalAH kathAH । Apo gAGgA ivAghaghnIrhareH pAdAmbujAzrayAH ॥ 3-20-5 ॥ Śaunaka inquired about the conversation between Vidura and Maitreya: There must have been many narrations of the spotless pastimes of the Lord. The hearing of such narrations is exactly like bathing in the water of the Ganges, for it can free one from all sinful reactions. ।। 3-20-5 ।।
