    स तथेति परतिज्ञाय गा रक्षित्वा पुनर उपाध्याय गृहान एत्य पुरॊर अग्रतः सथित्वा नमश चक्रे ॥ १-३-४६ ॥sa tatheti paratijJAya gA rakSitvA punara upAdhyAya gRhAna etya puròra agrataH sathitvA namaza cakre ॥ 1-3-46 ॥'Agreeing to this directive, Upamanyu resumed his duty of tending to the cows. Following his preceptor's guidance, he refrained from consuming alms and had no other sustenance. He abstained from drinking milk and avoided tasting the froth.' ॥ 1-3-46 ॥

And then starting again, into life,--these fought with the gods.' ॥ 1-71-7 ॥

    तमसो लक्षणं कामो रजसस्त्वर्थ उच्यते । सत्त्वस्य लक्षणं धर्मः श्रैष्ठ्यमेषां यथोत्तरम् ॥ ३८ ॥tamaso lakSaNaM kAmo rajasastvartha ucyate । sattvasya lakSaNaM dharmaH zraiSThyameSAM yathottaram ॥ 38 ॥The craving after sensual pleasures is declared to be the mark of Darkness, (the pursuit of) wealth (the mark) of Activity, (the desire to gain) spiritual merit the mark of Goodness; each later) named quality is) better than the preceding one.

    येनास्मिन् कर्मणा लोके ख्यातिमिच्छति पुष्कलाम् । न च शोचत्यसम्पत्तौ तद् विज्ञेयं तु राजसम् ॥ ३६ ॥yenAsmin karmaNA loke khyAtimicchati puSkalAm । na ca zocatyasampattau tad vijJeyaM tu rAjasam ॥ 36 ॥But, when (a man) desires (to gain) by an act much fame in this world and feels no sorrow on failing, know that it (bears the mark of the quality of) Activity.

    पञ्चैतान् यो महाऽयज्ञान्न हापयति शक्तितः । स गृहेऽपि वसन्नित्यं सूनादोषैर्न लिप्यते ॥ ७१ ॥paJcaitAn yo mahA'yajJAnna hApayati zaktitaH । sa gRhe'pi vasannityaM sUnAdoSairna lipyate ॥ 71 ॥He who neglects not these five great sacrifices, while he is able (to perform them), is not tainted by the sins (committed) in the five places of slaughter, though he constantly lives in the (order of) house (-holders).
