    ताननादृत्य योऽविद्वानर्थानारभते स्वयम् । तस्य व्यभिचरन्त्यर्था आरब्धाश्च पुनः पुनः ॥ ४-१८-५ ॥tAnanAdRtya yo'vidvAnarthAnArabhate svayam । tasya vyabhicarantyarthA ArabdhAzca punaH punaH ॥ 4-18-5 ॥A foolish person who manufactures his own ways and means through mental speculation and does not recognize the authority of the sages who lay down unimpeachable directions is simply unsuccessful again and again in his attempts. ॥ 4-18-5 ॥

Such a person can very easily enjoy life and pleasures. ॥ 4-18-4 ॥

    अस्मिन् लोकेऽथवामुष्मिन् मुनिभिस्तत्त्वदर्शिभिः । दृष्टा योगाः प्रयुक्ताश्च पुंसां श्रेयःप्रसिद्धये ॥ ४-१८-३ ‌‌॥asmin loke'thavAmuSmin munibhistattvadarzibhiH । dRSTA yogAH prayuktAzca puMsAM zreyaHprasiddhaye ॥ 4-18-3 ‌‌॥To benefit all human society, not only in this life but in the next, the great seers and sages have prescribed various methods conducive to the prosperity of the people in general. ॥ 4-18-3 ॥

    सन्नियच्छाभिभो मन्युं निबोध श्रावितं च मे । सर्वतः सारमादत्ते यथा मधुकरो बुधः ॥ ४-१८-२ ॥sanniyacchAbhibho manyuM nibodha zrAvitaM ca me । sarvataH sAramAdatte yathA madhukaro budhaH ॥ 4-18-2 ॥My dear Lord, please pacify your anger completely and hear patiently whatever I submit before you. Please turn your kind attention to this. I may be very poor, but a learned man takes the essence of knowledge from all places, just as a bumblebee collects honey from each and every flower. ॥ 4-18-2 ॥

    मैत्रेय उवाच इत्थं पृथुमभिष्टूय रुषा प्रस्फुरिताधरम् । पुनराहावनिर्भीता संस्तभ्यात्मानमात्मना ॥ ४-१८-१ ॥maitreya uvAca itthaM pRthumabhiSTUya ruSA prasphuritAdharam । punarAhAvanirbhItA saMstabhyAtmAnamAtmanA ॥ 4-18-1 ॥The great saint Maitreya continued to address Vidura: My dear Vidura, at that time, after the planet earth finished her prayers, King Pṛthu was still not pacified, and his lips trembled in great anger. Although the planet earth was frightened, she made up her mind and began to speak as follows in order to convince the King. ॥ 4-18-1 ॥

    भक्ताय मेऽनुरक्ताय तव चाधोक्षजस्य च । वक्तुमर्हसि योऽदुह्यद्वैन्यरूपेण गामिमाम् ॥ ४-१७-७ ॥bhaktAya me'nuraktAya tava cAdhokSajasya ca । vaktumarhasi yo'duhyadvainyarUpeNa gAmimAm ॥ 4-17-7 ॥As far as I am concerned, I am always your devotee as well as a devotee of the Lord, who is known as Adhokṣaja. Please therefore narrate all the stories of King Pṛthu, who, in the form of the son of King Vena, milked the cow-shaped earth. ॥ 4-17-7 ॥

    तन्नो भवानीहतु रातवेऽन्नं क्षुधार्दितानां नरदेवदेव । यावन्न नङ्क्ष्यामह उज्झितोर्जा वार्तापतिस्त्वं किल लोकपालः ॥ ४-१७-११ ॥tanno bhavAnIhatu rAtave'nnaM kSudhArditAnAM naradevadeva । yAvanna naGkSyAmaha ujjhitorjA vArtApatistvaM kila lokapAlaH ॥ 4-17-11 ॥Therefore we have all come to you for protection. You are not only a king, but the incarnation of God as well. Indeed, you are the king of all kings. You can give us all kinds of occupational engagements, for you are the master of our livelihood. Therefore, O king of all kings, please arrange to satisfy our hunger by the proper distribution of food grains. Please take care of us, lest we soon die for want of food. ॥ 4-17-11 ॥

Ravana, you do not understand this word of warning coming from your wellwisher. Men who are going to die do not heed the advice given by their friends.' ॥ 3-41-20॥
