शान्तिं पराश्वस्य यथा सथितॊ ऽभूर; उत्सृज्य बाणांश च धनुश च चित्रम न तव एव बीभत्सुर अलं नृशंसं; कर्तुं न पापे ऽसय मनॊ निविष्टम ।। ४-६१-२१ ।।

sanskrit

'Then the son of Santanu, smiling, addressed him, ‘Where was this sense of thine, and where was thy prowess, when thou wast rendered unconscious, renouncing thy arrows and well-strung bow? Know this—Vibhatsu is not given to committing cruel deeds, nor is his mind disposed to sin.’' ।। 4-61-21 ।।

english translation

zAntiM parAzvasya yathA sathitò 'bhUra; utsRjya bANAMza ca dhanuza ca citrama na tava eva bIbhatsura alaM nRzaMsaM; kartuM na pApe 'saya manò niviSTama || 4-61-21 ||

तरैलॊक्यहेतॊर न जहेत सवधर्मं; तस्मान न सर्वे निहता रणे ऽसमिन कषिप्रं कुरून याहि कुरुप्रवीर; विजित्य गाश च परतियातु पार्थः ।। ४-६१-२२ ।।

sanskrit

'He renounces not his principles, even for the sake of the three worlds. It is for this very reason that all of us have not perished in this battle. O foremost of Kuru heroes, return to the city of the Kurus, and allow Partha to depart, having accomplished the conquest of the kine. Never foolishly abandon your own welfare; indeed, one should always pursue that which leads to lasting benefit.' ।। 4-61-22 ।।

english translation

tarailòkyahetòra na jaheta savadharmaM; tasmAna na sarve nihatA raNe 'samina kaSipraM kurUna yAhi kurupravIra; vijitya gAza ca paratiyAtu pArthaH || 4-61-22 ||

'Vaisampayana continued, 'Hearing the words of his grandsire, which were for his own welfare, the wrathful Duryodhana, now no longer eager for battle, drew a deep breath and fell silent.'' ।। 4-61-23 ।।

duryòdhanasa tasya tu tana nizamya; pitAmahasyAtma hitaM vacò 'tha atItakAmò yudhi sò 'taya amarSI; rAjA viniHzvasya babhUva tUSNIma || 4-61-23 ||

'Reflecting that Bhishma’s counsel was for the best, and seeing the Pandavas gaining strength, the other warriors, eager to protect Duryodhana, resolved to withdraw.' ।। 4-61-24 ।।

tada bhISma vAkyaM hitama IkSya sarve; dhanaMjayAgniM ca vivardhamAnama nivartanAyaiva manò nidadhyura; duryòdhanaM te parirakSamANAH || 4-61-24 ||

'Beholding those foremost of Kuru heroes returning to their city, Dhananjaya, the son of Pritha, followed them for a while with a cheerful heart, eager to address and honor them.' ।। 4-61-25 ।।

tAna parasthitAna parItamanAH sa pArthò; dhanaMjayaH parekSya kurupravIrAna AbhASamANò 'nuyayau muhUrtaM; saMpUjayaMsa tatra gurUna mahAtmA || 4-61-25 ||
