'Vaisampayana said: Then, as great havoc was wrought among the Kurus, Bhishma—the son of Santanu and grandsire of the Bharatas—rushed upon Arjuna.' ।। 4-59-1 ।।
'Grasping an excellent bow adorned with gold, he took up arrows of keen points, capable of piercing the very vitals of his foe and inflicting grievous wounds.' ।। 4-59-2 ।।

तम उद्वीक्ष्य तथायान्तं कौन्तेयः परवीर हा परत्यगृह्णात परहृष्टात्मा धारा धरम इवाचलः ।। ४-५९-५ ।।
