[वै] ततः शांतनवॊ भीष्मॊ दुराधर्षः परतापवान वध्यमानेषु यॊधेषु धनंजयम उपाद्रवत ॥ ४-५९-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana said: Then, as great havoc was wrought among the Kurus, Bhishma—the son of Santanu and grandsire of the Bharatas—rushed upon Arjuna.' ॥ 4-59-1 ॥

परगृह्य कार्मुकश्रेष्ठं जातरूपपरिष्कृतम शरान आदाय तीक्ष्णाग्नान मर्मभेद परमाथिनः ॥ ४-५९-२ ॥

'Grasping an excellent bow adorned with gold, he took up arrows of keen points, capable of piercing the very vitals of his foe and inflicting grievous wounds.' ॥ 4-59-2 ॥

पाण्डुरेणातपत्रेण धरियमाणेन मूर्धनि शुशुभे स नरव्याघ्रॊ गिरिः सूर्यॊदये यथा ॥ ४-५९-३ ॥

'And with a white umbrella held above his head, that tiger among men shone resplendent, like a mountain bathed in the glow of sunrise.' ॥ 4-59-3 ॥

परध्माय शङ्खं गाङ्गेयॊ धार्तराष्ट्रान परहर्षयन परदक्षिणम उपावृत्य बीभत्सुं समवारयत ॥ ४-५९-४ ॥

'Then the son of Ganga, blowing his conch, cheered the sons of Dhritarashtra, and advancing on the right, came upon Vibhatsu, barring his course.' ॥ 4-59-4 ॥

तम उद्वीक्ष्य तथायान्तं कौन्तेयः परवीर हा परत्यगृह्णात परहृष्टात्मा धारा धरम इवाचलः ॥ ४-५९-५ ॥

'The son of Kunti, slayer of hostile heroes, beheld him approach and received him with a joyful heart, as a mountain welcomes a cloud heavy with rain.' ॥ 4-59-5 ॥
