[वै] एतस्मिन्न अन्तरे तत्र महावीर्यपराक्रमः आजगाम महासत्त्वः कृपः शस्त्रभृतां वरः अर्जुनं परति संयॊद्धुं युद्धार्थी स महारथः ॥ ४-५२-१ ॥

'Meanwhile, there came the one of great valor and prowess, the great-souled Kṛpa, best among weapon-bearers, that great chariot-warrior, seeking battle, to fight against Arjuna.' ॥ 4-52-1 ॥

english translation

[vai] etasminna antare tatra mahAvIryaparAkramaH AjagAma mahAsattvaH kRpaH zastrabhRtAM varaH arjunaM parati saMyòddhuM yuddhArthI sa mahArathaH ॥ 4-52-1 ॥

तौ रथौ सूर्यसंकाशौ यॊत्स्यमानौ महाबलौ शारदाव इव जीमूतौ वयरॊचेतां वयवस्थितौ ॥ ४-५२-२ ॥

'Those two chariots, sun-like in radiance, belonging to the two great warriors about to fight, stationed opposite each other, shone like two clouds in autumn.' ॥ 4-52-2 ॥

tau rathau sUryasaMkAzau yòtsyamAnau mahAbalau zAradAva iva jImUtau vayaròcetAM vayavasthitau ॥ 4-52-2 ॥

पार्थॊ ऽपि विश्रुतं लॊके गाण्डीवं परमायुधम विकृष्य चिक्षेप बहून नाराचान मर्मभेदिनः ॥ ४-५२-३ ॥

'Partha (Arjuna), famed throughout the world, wielded the great bow Gandiva— drawing it and releasing many arrows that pierced the vital points of his enemies.' ॥ 4-52-3 ॥

pArthò 'pi vizrutaM lòke gANDIvaM paramAyudhama vikRSya cikSepa bahUna nArAcAna marmabhedinaH ॥ 4-52-3 ॥

तान अप्राप्ताञ शितैर बाणैर नाराचान रक्तभॊजनान कृपश चिच्छेद पार्थस्य शतशॊ ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥ ४-५२-४ ॥

'And Pritha’s son, Arjuna, drawing the renowned Gandiva—the foremost of weapons famed throughout the world—released countless iron arrows, each capable of piercing deep into the vital points of his foes.' ॥ 4-52-4 ॥

tAna aprAptAJa zitaira bANaira nArAcAna raktabhòjanAna kRpaza ciccheda pArthasya zatazò 'tha sahasrazaH ॥ 4-52-4 ॥

ततः पार्थश च संक्रुद्धश चित्रान मार्गान परदर्शयन दिशः संछादयन बाणैः परदिशश च महारथः ॥ ४-५२-५ ॥

'Then, enraged, the mighty charioteer Arjuna executed various skilled maneuvers, unleashing a relentless shower of arrows from all sides.' ॥ 4-52-5 ॥
