लॊभाद वा ते न जानीयुर अस्मान वा मॊह आविशत हीनातिरिक्तम एतेषां भीष्मॊ वेदितुम अर्हति ॥ ४-४२-६ ॥
'Whether this is due to their own forgetfulness, driven by ambition for sovereignty, or a miscalculation on our part, it is for Bhishma to determine the deficiency or excess of the pledged period.' ॥ 4-42-6 ॥
english translation
अर्थानां तु पुनर दवैधे नित्यं भवति संशयः अन्यथा चिन्तितॊ हय अर्थः पुनर भवति चान्यथा ॥ ४-४२-७ ॥
'For when the attainment of a desired object is uncertain, doubt must naturally arise; and what is judged one way may often turn out otherwise.' ॥ 4-42-7 ॥

उत्तरं मार्गमाणानां मत्स्यसेनां युयुत्सताम यदि बीभत्सुर आयातस तेषां कः सयात पराङ्मुखः ॥ ४-४२-८ ॥
'Even moralists find it difficult to judge their own actions. As for us, we came here to engage the Matsyas in battle and seize their cattle stationed to the north. Now, if it so happens that Arjuna has arrived, how can any fault be laid upon us?' ॥ 4-42-8 ॥

तरिगर्तानां वयं हेतॊर मत्स्यान यॊद्धुम इहागताः मत्स्यानां विप्रकारांस ते बहून अस्मान अकीर्तयन ॥ ४-४२-९ ॥
'We came to fight the Matsyas on behalf of the Trigartas, for we had been told of the many acts of oppression committed by the Matsyas.' ॥ 4-42-9 ॥

तेषां भयाभिपन्नानां तद अस्माभिः परतिश्रुतम परथमं तैर गरहीतव्यं मत्स्यानां गॊधनं महत ॥ ४-४२-१० ॥
'It was for this reason that we pledged our aid to the Trigartas, who were overcome with fear.' ॥ 4-42-10 ॥
