[वै] उत्तरं सारथिं कृत्वा शमीं कृत्वा परदक्षिणम आयुधं सर्वम आदाय ततः परायाद धनंजयः ॥ ४-४१-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana said, “Making Uttara his charioteer and reverently circumambulating the Sami tree, the son of Pandu gathered all his weapons and set forth."' ॥ 4-41-1 ॥

english translation

[vai] uttaraM sArathiM kRtvA zamIM kRtvA paradakSiNama AyudhaM sarvama AdAya tataH parAyAda dhanaMjayaH ॥ 4-41-1 ॥

धवजं सिंहं रथात तस्माद अपनीय महारथः परणिधाय शमी मूले परायाद उत्तरसारथिः ॥ ४-४१-२ ॥

'That mighty car-warrior departed with Uttara at the reins, having first removed the banner bearing the lion emblem and laid it at the foot of the Sami tree.' ॥ 4-41-2 ॥

english translation

dhavajaM siMhaM rathAta tasmAda apanIya mahArathaH paraNidhAya zamI mUle parAyAda uttarasArathiH ॥ 4-41-2 ॥

दैवीं मायां रथे युक्त्वा विहितां विश्वकर्मणा काञ्चनं सिंहलाङ्गूलं धवजं वानरलक्षणम ॥ ४-४१-३ ॥

'In its place, he raised his own golden standard, adorned with the figure of an ape with a lion’s tail — a wondrous creation wrought by Viswakarman himself.' ॥ 4-41-3 ॥

daivIM mAyAM rathe yuktvA vihitAM vizvakarmaNA kAJcanaM siMhalAGgUlaM dhavajaM vAnaralakSaNama ॥ 4-41-3 ॥

मनसा चिन्तयाम आस परसादं पावकस्य च स च तच चिन्तितं जञात्वा धवजे भूतान्य अचॊदयत ॥ ४-४१-४ ॥

'For, no sooner had he thought of that gift of Agni than the latter, knowing his wish, commanded the superhuman beings who dwelt upon it to take their places upon the banner.' ॥ 4-41-4 ॥

manasA cintayAma Asa parasAdaM pAvakasya ca sa ca taca cintitaM jaJAtvA dhavaje bhUtAnya acòdayata ॥ 4-41-4 ॥

स पताकं विचित्राङ्गं सॊपासङ्गं महारथः रथम आस्थाय बीभत्सुः कौन्तेयः शवेतवाहनः ॥ ४-४१-५ ॥

'Adorned with a splendid flag of exquisite craftsmanship, fitted with quivers, and embellished with gold, that excellent, celestial flagstaff then swiftly descended from the heavens onto his chariot.' ॥ 4-41-5 ॥

sa patAkaM vicitrAGgaM sòpAsaGgaM mahArathaH rathama AsthAya bIbhatsuH kaunteyaH zavetavAhanaH ॥ 4-41-5 ॥
