अन्यॊन्यं चातिसंरब्धौ विचेरतुर अमर्षणौ कृतास्त्रौ निशितैर बाणैर असि शक्तिगदा भृतौ ॥ ४-३१-२१ ॥
'Enraged and eager to overpower one another, those fierce and highly skilled fighters—adept in the use of swords, darts, and maces—moved about the battlefield, assailing each other with sharp and deadly arrows.' ॥ 4-31-21 ॥

ततॊ राजा सुशर्माणं विव्याध दशभिः शरैः पञ्चभिः पञ्चभिश चास्य विव्याध चतुरॊ हयान ॥ ४-३१-२२ ॥
'Then king Virata pierced Susarman with ten arrows, and with five arrows each, he struck all four of his (Susarman’s) horses.' ॥ 4-31-22 ॥

तथैव मत्स्यराजानं सुशर्मा युद्धदुर्मदः पञ्चाशता शितैर बाणैर विव्याध परमास्त्र वित ॥ ४-३१-२३ ॥
'In return, Susarman—unshakable in battle and skilled in deadly weapons—pierced the king of the Matsyas with fifty sharp arrows.' ॥ 4-31-23 ॥

ततः सैन्यं समावृत्य मत्स्यराजसुशर्मणॊः नाभ्यजानंस तदान्यॊन्यं परदॊषे रजसावृते ॥ ४-३१-२४ ॥
'And then, O great king, due to the rising dust on the battlefield, the warriors of both Susarman and the Matsya king could no longer distinguish one another.' ॥ 4-31-24 ॥
