पित्रोर्दोषैर्मृताः केचित् केचिद्बालग्रहैर्मृताः। अपरे रिष्टयोगेभ्य (योगाद्यै) स्त्रिविधा बालमृत्यवः॥२१॥
Child-mortality is of three kinds: vis. (1) Some children die on account of the faults of their parents; (2) some die owing to Balagrahas (certain demons) and (3) others die owing to malignant planetary positions.

pitrordoSairmRtAH kecit kecidbAlagrahairmRtAH। apare riSTayogebhya (yogAdyai) strividhA bAlamRtyavaH॥21॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptएवं सूक्ष्मतरं ज्ञात्वा शिशोर्दोषगुणान्वदेत्। आद्वादशाब्दं मर्त्यानामायुर्ज्ञातुं न शक्यते। जपहोमचिकित्साद्यैर्बालं रक्षेद्गुणाधिकैः॥२२॥
One should begin to predict the merits and demerits of a child only after ascertaining thus the aforementioned things minutely. It is not possible to ascertain the longevity of human beings until they are 12 years of age. Hence children should be protected through Japa (incantations of holy Mantras, worship of the Fire-God, performance of sacrifices, by administering medicines, etc.,) all of which are productive of immense good.

evaM sUkSmataraM jJAtvA zizordoSaguNAnvadet। AdvAdazAbdaM martyAnAmAyurjJAtuM na zakyate। japahomacikitsAdyairbAlaM rakSedguNAdhikaiH॥22॥

Those children that are born at the junction of two signs are either born dead or are shortlived. This is all the more certain, it is said, when the Lagna is aspected by, or is conjoined with malefics.

One born in a Gandanta (Adh I Sl. 4 supra) Tara will destroy the entire families of his parents. But if he lives at all, he will become a king rich in elephants and horses.

When the Sun and the Moon are posited in the 3rd house identical with a malefic sign and in conjunction with malefics in a nativity the native, it should be noted, will fall ill and take his exit before he completes three years.
