तमोमयं शिवं ध्यात्वा मकारं शुक्लवर्णकम् । द्वात्रिंशन्मात्रया चैव रेचयेद्विधिना पुनः ॥५-५१॥

After this, while again meditating on the 'Makar' seed mantra consisting of Lord Shiva having Tamoguna and Shukla varna, chanting it thirty-two times and expelling it from the second (right) nostril.

पुनः पिङ्गलयाऽऽपूर्य कुम्भकेनैव धारयेत् । इडया रेचयेत्पश्चात्तद्बीजेन क्रमेण तु ॥५-५२॥

Now after this, it was done again in the same order or type (as it was done from the left nostril). In the same way, fill the vital air inside the body from the right nostril by reciting sixteen Beej Mantras and keep it inside the body by chanting the Beej Mantra sixty-four times. After this, in the same way, that vital air should be exhaled from the left nostril by chanting thirty-two Beeja Mantras.

अनुलोमविलोमेन वारं वारं च साधयेत् । पूरकान्ते कुम्भकान्तं धृतनासापुटद्वयम् । कनिष्ठाऽनामिकाऽङ्गुष्ठैस्तर्जनीमध्यमे विना ॥५-५३॥

Anulom – Vilom, that is, this breathing process should be done repeatedly through the left and right nostrils. While doing this, while filling the prana in the body and taking it out from the body, use only the little, ring finger (smallest, third) fingers and thumb on either side of the nostrils. The index and middle (first and second) fingers should not be used.

Nigarbha Pranayam is done without Beeja Mantra. The seeker should do the Puraka (inhaling the breath), Kumbhaka (retaining the Prana inside) and Rechak (expeling the Prana) activities from one to a hundred times (100) without the Beeja Mantra.

उत्तमा विंशतिर्मात्रा षोडशी मात्रा मध्यमा । अधमा द्वादशी मात्रा प्राणायामास्त्रिधा स्मृताः ॥५-५५॥

Three divisions of Pranayam have been created on the basis of quality. In which Pranayama consisting of twenty quantities is considered the best i.e. the best. Pranayam having sixteen quantities is considered to be Madhyam i.e. middle and Pranayam having twelve quantities is considered to be Adham i.e. inferior or less good.
