सन्ध्याद्वये अपि मण्डलं आबध्नन्तो मृगा विहङ्गा वा । दीप्तायां दिश्यथ वा क्रोशन्तः संहता भयदाः ॥ ४६-६६ ॥

Animals or birds that form circles during both periods of twilight, or those that howl together in a direction ablaze with light, are harbingers of fear.

english translation

sandhyAdvaye api maNDalaM Abadhnanto mRgA vihaGgA vA । dIptAyAM dizyatha vA krozantaH saMhatA bhayadAH ॥ 46-66 ॥

श्येनाः प्ररुदन्त इव द्वारे क्रोशन्ति जम्बुका दीप्ताः । प्रविशेन्नरेन्द्रभवने कपोतकः कौशिको यदि वा ॥ ४६-६७ ॥

Hawks seem to wail, and jackals howl fiercely at the gate; should a pigeon or an owl enter the palace of the king, it portends disaster.

english translation

zyenAH prarudanta iva dvAre krozanti jambukA dIptAH । pravizennarendrabhavane kapotakaH kauziko yadi vA ॥ 46-67 ॥

कुक्कुटरुतं प्रदोषे हेमन्तऽदौ च कोकिलऽलापाः । प्रतिलोममण्डलचराः श्येनऽद्याश्चाम्बरे भयदाः ॥ ४६-६८ ॥

The crowing of roosters at nightfall and the songs of cuckoos at the beginning of winter are ominous; likewise, hawks and other birds of prey circling the sky in a counter-clockwise direction forebode danger.

kukkuTarutaM pradoSe hemanta'dau ca kokila'lApAH । pratilomamaNDalacarAH zyena'dyAzcAmbare bhayadAH ॥ 46-68 ॥

गृहचैत्यतोरणेषु द्वारेषु च पक्षिसङ्घ सम्पातः । मधुवल्मीकाम्भोरुह समुद्भवश् चापि नाशाय ॥ ४६-६९ ॥

There was a flock of birds in the archways and doors of the houses and temples. The honeycomb, the lotus flower, and the roots of the tree were also destroyed.

gRhacaityatoraNeSu dvAreSu ca pakSisaGgha sampAtaH । madhuvalmIkAmbhoruha samudbhavaz cApi nAzAya ॥ 46-69 ॥

श्वभिरस्थिशवावयवप्रवेशनं मन्दिरेषु मरकाय । पशुशस्त्रव्याहारे नृपमृत्युर्मुनिवचश्चैदम् ॥ ४६-७० ॥

If birds should swarm about houses, places of worship, towers or gates, or if honey-combs or ant-hills or lotus should be found to be formed or to grow in such places, there would be misery in the land.
