एते पादाश्चिकित्सायाः कर्मसाधनहेतवः । गुणवद्भिस्त्रिभिः पादैश्चतुर्थो गुणवान् भिषक् ॥१६॥

These are the four essential factors for the practice of medicine: the physician, the patient, the medicine, and the nurse. Among them, the physician is considered most virtuous if he possesses all the three qualities of the aforementioned factors.

व्याधिमल्पेन कालेन महान्तमपि साधयेत् । वैद्यहीनास्त्रयः पादा गुणवन्तोऽप्यपार्थकाः ॥१७॥

Even a small ailment can be managed effectively by a physician with skill and knowledge. The other three factors (patient, medicine, and nurse) become ineffective if the physician is lacking in competence.

उद्गातृहोतृब्रह्माणो यथाऽध्वर्युं विनाऽध्वरे । वैद्यस्तु गुणवानेकस्तारयेदातुरां सदा ॥१८॥

Just as a religious sacrifice is incomplete without the presence of an Adhvaryu (a priest who performs sacrificial rites), so is the treatment of a patient incomplete without a competent physician.

प्लवं प्रतितरैर्हीनं कर्णधार इवाम्भसि । तत्त्वाधिगतशास्त्रार्थो दृष्टकर्मा स्वयङ्कृती ॥१९॥

A physician who lacks the qualities of a true healer, like a boat without a helmsman on turbulent waters, cannot achieve success. He should be well-versed in the principles of the science, capable of self-reliant practice, and skilled in the practical application of his knowledge.

A physician should be light-handed, clean, courageous, well-equipped with appropriate tools and medicines, skilled in practical applications, intelligent, knowledgeable, and experienced.
