सा शयानमुपव्रज्य दृष्ट्वा चोत्तारलोचनम् । प्राणेन्द्रियात्मभिस्त्यक्तं हतास्मीत्यपतद्भुवि ॥ ६-१४-४६ ॥

When the maidservant approached the child, who was lying down, she saw that his eyes were turned upward. There were no signs of life, all his senses having stopped, and she could understand that the child was dead. Seeing this, she immediately cried, “Now I am doomed,” and fell to the ground. ॥ 6-14-46 ॥

english translation

जब धाय उस सोते हुए बच्चे के पास पहुँची तो उसने देखा कि उसकी आँखें ऊपर की ओर उलट गई हैं, उसके शरीर में प्राण का कोई संचार नहीं है और उसकी समस्त इन्द्रियाँ निष्क्रिय हो गई हैं। अत: वह समझ गई कि बालक मर चुका है। यह देखकर वह तुरन्त चिल्ला उठी, ‘हाय मैं मारी गई’ और पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ी। ॥ ६-१४-४६ ॥

तस्यास्तदाकर्ण्य भृशातुरं स्वरं घ्नन्त्याः कराभ्यामुर उच्चकैरपि । प्रविश्य राज्ञी त्वरयाऽऽत्मजान्तिकं ददर्श बालं सहसा मृतं सुतम् ॥ ६-१४-४७ ॥

In great agitation, the maidservant struck her breast with both hands and cried loudly in regretful words. Hearing her loud voice, the Queen immediately came, and when she approached her son, she saw that he was suddenly dead. ॥ 6-14-47 ॥

अत्यन्त विक्षुब्ध होकर वह धाय अपने दोनों हाथों से अपनी छाती पीटने लगी और आर्तस्वर में जोर-जोर से चिल्लाने लगी। उसकी तेज आवाज सुनकर रानी तुरन्त आ गई और जब वह अपने पुत्र के पास पहुँची, तो देखा कि वह सहसा ही मर चुका है। ॥ ६-१४-४७ ॥

In great lamentation, her hair and dress in disarray, the Queen fell to the ground unconscious. ॥ 6-14-48 ॥

अगाध शोक के कारण रानी मूर्च्छित होकर पृथ्वी पर ऐसे गिर पड़ी कि उस के बाल तथा वस्त्र बिखर गये । ॥ ६-१४-४८ ॥

ततो नृपान्तःपुरवर्तिनो जना नराश्च नार्यश्च निशम्य रोदनम् । आगत्य तुल्यव्यसनाः सुदुःखितास्ताश्च व्यलीकं रुरुदुः कृतागसः ॥ ६-१४-४९ ॥

O King Parīkṣit, hearing the loud crying, all the inhabitants of the palace came, both men and women. Being equally aggrieved, they also began to cry. The queens who had administered the poison also cried pretentiously, knowing full well their offense. ॥ 6-14-49 ॥

english translation

हे राजा परीक्षित! रानी का जोर-जोर से विलखना सुनकर, रनिवास के सभी स्त्री-पुरुष आ पहुँचे। समान रूप से संतप्त होने के कारण रोने लगे। जिन रानियों ने विष दिया था, अपने अपराध को भलीभाँति जानती हुई, वे भी झूठमूठ रोने का ढोंग करने लगीं। ॥ ६-१४-४९ ॥

श्रुत्वा मृतं पुत्रमलक्षितान्तकं विनष्टदृष्टिः प्रपतन् स्खलन् पथि । स्नेहानुबन्धैधितया शुचा भृशं विमूर्च्छितोऽनुप्रकृतिर्द्विजैर्वृतः ॥ ६-१४-५० ॥

When King Chitraketu heard of his son’s death from unknown causes, he became almost blind. Because of his great affection for his son, his lamentation grew like a blazing fire, and as he went to see the dead child, he kept slipping and falling on the ground. Surrounded by his ministers and other officers and the learned brāhmaṇas present, ॥ 6-14-50 ॥

जब राजा चित्रकेतु ने सुना कि न जाने कैसे उसका पुत्र मर गया है, तो वह प्राय: अन्धासा हो गया। पुत्र के प्रति अगाध स्नेह के कारण उसका विलाप जलती हुई अग्नि के समान बढ़ता गया और रास्ते भर वह भूमि पर लगातार गिरता-पड़ता तथा लुढक़ता हुआ उस मृत बालक को देखने गया। अपने मंत्रियों तथा अन्य अधिकारियों एवं विद्वान ब्राह्मणों से घिरा हुआ ॥ ६-१४-५० ॥
