तयेन्द्रः स्मासहत्तापं निर्वृतिर्नामुमाविशत् । ह्रीमन्तं वाच्यतां प्राप्तं सुखयन्त्यपि नो गुणाः ॥ ६-१३-११ ॥
Following the advice of the demigods, Indra killed Vṛtrāsura, and he suffered because of this sinful killing. Although the other demigods were happy, he could not derive happiness from the killing of Vṛtrāsura. Indra’s other good qualities, such as tolerance and opulence, could not help him in his grief. ॥ 6-13-11 ॥

देवताओं की सलाह से इन्द्र ने वृत्रासुर का वध कर दिया और इस पापपूर्ण हत्या के कारण उसे कष्ट उठाना पड़ा। यद्यपि अन्य देवतागण प्रसन्न थे, किन्तु वृत्रासुर की हत्या से उसे तनिक भी प्रसन्नता नहीं हुई। इन्द्र के इस क्लेश में अन्य उत्तम गुण, यथा धैर्य तथा ऐश्वर्य, उसके सहायक नहीं बन सके। ॥ ६-१३-११ ॥

तां ददर्शानुधावन्तीं चाण्डालीमिव रूपिणीम् । जरया वेपमानाङ्गीं यक्ष्मग्रस्तामसृक्पटाम् ॥ ६-१३-१२ ॥
Indra saw personified sinful reaction chasing him, appearing like a caṇḍāla woman, a woman of the lowest class. She seemed very old, and all the limbs of her body trembled. Because she was afflicted with tuberculosis, her body and garments were covered with blood. ॥ 6-13-12 ॥

इन्द्र ने साक्षात् ब्रह्महत्या के फल को एक चाण्डाल स्त्री के समान प्रकट होकर अपना पीछा करते देखा। वह अत्यन्त वृद्धा प्रतीत होती थी और उसके शरीर के सभी अंग काँप रहे थे। यक्ष्मा रोग से पीडि़त होने के कारण उसका सारा शरीर तथा वस्त्र रक्त से सने थे। ॥ ६-१३-१२ ॥

O King, Indra first fled to the sky, but there also he saw the woman of personified sin chasing him. This witch followed him wherever he went. At last he very quickly went to the northeast and entered the Mānasa-sarovara Lake. ॥ 6-13-14 ॥

हे राजन्! इन्द्र पहले आकाश की ओर भागा, किन्तु उसने वहाँ भी उस ब्रह्महत्या रूपिणी स्त्री को अपना पीछा करते देखा। जहाँ कहीं भी वह गया, यह डायन उसका पीछा करती रही। अन्त में वह तेजी से उत्तरपूर्व की ओर गया और मानस सरोवर में घुस गया। ॥ ६-१३-१४ ॥

स आवसत्पुष्करनालतन्तूनलब्धभोगो यदिहाग्निदूतः । वर्षाणि साहस्रमलक्षितोऽन्तः स चिन्तयन् ब्रह्मवधाद्विमोक्षम् ॥ ६-१३-१५ ॥
Always thinking of how he could be relieved from the sinful reaction for killing a brāhmaṇa, King Indra, invisible to everyone, lived in the lake for one thousand years in the subtle fibers of the stem of a lotus. The fire-god used to bring him his share of all yajñas, but because the fire-god was afraid to enter the water, Indra was practically starving. ॥ 6-13-15 ॥

सदैव यह सोचते हुए कि ब्रह्महत्या से किस प्रकार छुटकारा प्राप्त हो, राजा इन्द्र, सबों से अदृश्य रहकर सरोवर में कमलनाल के सूक्ष्म तन्तुओं के भीतर एक हजार वर्ष तक रहा। अग्निदेव उसे समस्त यज्ञों का उसका भाग लाकर देते, क्योंकि अग्निदेव जल में प्रवेश करने से भयभीत थे, अत: इन्द्र एक तरह से भूखों मर रहा था। ॥ ६-१३-१५ ॥
