मैत्रेय उवाच गङ्गायमुनयोर्नद्योरन्तरा क्षेत्रमावसन् । आरब्धानेव बुभुजे भोगान् पुण्यजिहासया ॥ ४-२१-११ ॥

The great saintly sage Maitreya told Vidura: My dear Vidura, King Pṛthu lived in the tract of land between the two great rivers Ganges and Yamunā. Because he was very opulent, it appeared that he was enjoying his destined fortune in order to diminish the results of his past pious activities. ॥ 4-21-11 ॥

english translation

मैत्रेय ऋषि ने विदुर से कहा : हे विदुर, राजा पृथु गंगा तथा यमुना इन दो महान् नदियों के मध्यवर्ती भूभाग में रहते थे। वे अत्यन्त ऐश्वर्यवान थे, अत: ऐसा प्रतीत होता था मानो अपने पूर्व पुण्यों के फल को कम करने के लिए ही प्रारब्ध से प्राप्त सम्पत्ति का भोग कर रहे थे। ॥ ४-२१-११ ॥

सर्वत्रास्खलितादेशः सप्तद्वीपैकदण्डधृक् । अन्यत्र ब्राह्मणकुलादन्यत्राच्युतगोत्रतः ॥ ४-२१-१२ ॥

Mahārāja Pṛthu was an unrivaled king and possessed the scepter for ruling all the seven islands on the surface of the globe. No one could disobey his irrevocable orders but the saintly persons, the brāhmaṇas and the descendants of the Supreme Personality of Godhead [the Vaiṣṇavas]. ॥ 4-21-12 ॥

महाराज पृथु चक्रवर्ती राजा थे और इस भूमण्डल के सातों द्वीपों पर शासन करने के लिए राजदण्ड धारण करने वाले थे। उनके अटल आदेश का उल्लंघन साधु-जनों, ब्राह्मणों और वैष्णवों के अतिरिक्त कोई नहीं कर सकता था। ॥ ४-२१-१२ ‌॥

एकदाऽऽसीन्महासत्रदीक्षा तत्र दिवौकसाम् । समाजो ब्रह्मर्षीणां च राजर्षीणां च सत्तम ॥ ४-२१-१३ ॥

Once upon a time King Pṛthu initiated the performance of a very great sacrifice in which great saintly sages, brāhmaṇas, demigods from higher planetary systems and great saintly kings known as rājarṣis all assembled together. ॥ 4-21-13 ॥

english translation

एक बार राजा पृथु ने एक महान् यज्ञ सम्पन्न करने का व्रत लिया जिसमें ऋषि, ब्राह्मण, स्वर्गलोक के देवता तथा बड़े-बड़े राजर्षि एकत्र हुए। ॥ ४-२१-१३ ॥

तस्मिन्नर्हत्सु सर्वेषु स्वर्चितेषु यथार्हतः । उत्थितः सदसो मध्ये ताराणामुडुराडिव ॥ ४-२१-१४ ॥

In that great assembly, Mahārāja Pṛthu first of all worshiped all the respectable visitors according to their respective positions. After this, he stood up in the midst of the assembly, and it appeared that the full moon had arisen amongst the stars. ॥ 4-21-14 ॥

english translation

उस महान् सभा में महाराज पृथु ने सर्वप्रथम समस्त सम्मानीय अतिथियों की उनके पदों के अनुसार यथा-योग्य पूजा की। फिर वे उस सभा के मध्य में खड़े हो गये। ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ मानो तारों के बीच पूर्ण चन्द्रमा का उदय हुआ हो। ॥ ४-२१-१४ ॥

प्रांशुः पीनायतभुजो गौरः कञ्जारुणेक्षणः । सुनासः सुमुखः सौम्यः पीनांसः सुद्विजस्मितः ॥ ४-२१-१५ ॥

King Pṛthu’s body was tall and sturdy, and his complexion was fair. His arms were full and broad and his eyes as bright as the rising sun. His nose was straight, his face very beautiful, and his personality grave. His teeth were set beautifully in his smiling face. ॥ 4-21-15 ॥

राजा पृथु का शरीर अत्यन्त ऊँचा और पुष्ट था और उनका रंग गोरा था। उनकी बाहें पूर्ण तथा चौड़ी और नेत्र उदीयमान सूर्य के समान चमकीले थे। उनकी नाक सीधी, मुख अत्यन्त सुन्दर तथा व्यक्तित्व सौम्य था। मुस्कान से युक्त उनके मुख में दाँत सुन्दर ढंग से लगे थे। ॥ ४-२१-१५ ॥
