जनस्तु हेतुः सुखदुःखयोश्चेत्किमात्मनश्चात्र हि भौमयोस्तत् । जिह्वां क्वचित्सन्दशति स्वदद्भिस्तद्वेदनायां कतमाय कुप्येत् ।। ११-२३-५१ ।।

If you say that these people are the cause of my happiness and distress, then where is the place of the soul in such a conception? This happiness and distress pertain not to the soul but to the interactions of material bodies. If someone bites his tongue with his own teeth, at whom can he become angry in his suffering? ।। 11-23-51 ।।

english translation

यदि आप कहते हैं कि ये लोग ही मेरे सुख और दुःख का कारण हैं, तो ऐसी धारणा में आत्मा का स्थान कहाँ है? यह सुख और दुःख आत्मा से नहीं बल्कि भौतिक शरीरों की परस्पर क्रिया से संबंधित है। यदि कोई अपनी जीभ को अपने ही दांतों से काट ले तो वह पीड़ा में किस पर क्रोधित हो सकता है? ।। ११-२३-५१ ।।
