उद्धव उवाच साधुस्तवोत्तमश्लोक मतः कीदृग्विधः प्रभो । भक्तिस्त्वय्युपयुज्येत कीदृशी सद्भिरादृता ॥ ११-११-२६ ॥
Śrī Uddhava said: My dear Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, what type of person do You consider to be a true devotee, and what type of devotional service is approved by great devotees as worthy of being offered to Your Lordship? ॥ 11-11-26 ॥

श्री उद्धव ने कहा: मेरे प्रिय भगवान, हे भगवान, आप किस प्रकार के व्यक्ति को सच्चा भक्त मानते हैं, और किस प्रकार की भक्ति सेवा को महान भक्त आपके प्रभु को अर्पित करने के योग्य मानते हैं? ॥ ११-११-२६ ॥

एतन्मे पुरुषाध्यक्ष लोकाध्यक्ष जगत्प्रभो । प्रणतायानुरक्ताय प्रपन्नाय च कथ्यताम् ॥ ११-११-२७ ॥
My dear ruler of the universal controllers, O Lord of Vaikuṇṭha and almighty God of the universe, I am Your devotee, and because I love You I have no other shelter than You. Therefore please explain this to me. ॥ 11-11-27 ॥

मेरे प्रिय सार्वभौमिक नियंताओं के शासक, हे वैकुंठ के भगवान और ब्रह्मांड के सर्वशक्तिमान भगवान, मैं आपका भक्त हूं, और क्योंकि मैं आपसे प्यार करता हूं, मेरे पास आपके अलावा कोई अन्य आश्रय नहीं है। अत: कृपया मुझे यह बात समझाइये। ॥ ११-११-२७ ॥

त्वं ब्रह्म परमं व्योम पुरुषः प्रकृतेः परः । अवतीर्णोऽसि भगवन् स्वेच्छोपात्तपृथग्वपुः ॥ ११-११-२८ ॥
My dear Lord, as the Absolute Truth You are transcendental to material nature, and like the sky You are never entangled in any way. Still, being controlled by Your devotees’ love, You accept many different forms, incarnating according to Your devotees’ desires. ॥ 11-11-28 ॥

मेरे प्रिय भगवान, परम सत्य के रूप में आप भौतिक प्रकृति से परे हैं, और आकाश की तरह आप कभी भी किसी भी तरह से उलझते नहीं हैं। फिर भी, अपने भक्तों के प्रेम से वशीभूत होकर, आप अपने भक्तों की इच्छाओं के अनुसार अवतार लेते हुए, कई अलग-अलग रूप स्वीकार करते हैं। ॥ ११-११-२८ ॥

श्रीभगवानुवाच कृपालुरकृतद्रोहस्तितिक्षुः सर्वदेहिनाम् । सत्यसारोऽनवद्यात्मा समः सर्वोपकारकः ॥ ११-११-२९ ॥
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O Uddhava, a saintly person is merciful and never injures others. Even if others are aggressive he is tolerant and forgiving toward all living entities. His strength and meaning in life come from the truth itself, he is free from all envy and jealousy, and his mind is equal in material happiness and distress. ॥ 11-11-29 ॥

भगवान के परम व्यक्तित्व ने कहा: हे उद्धव, एक संत व्यक्ति दयालु होता है और कभी दूसरों को चोट नहीं पहुँचाता है। भले ही अन्य लोग आक्रामक हों, वह सभी जीवों के प्रति सहिष्णु और क्षमाशील है। जीवन में उसकी ताकत और अर्थ सत्य से ही आते हैं, वह सभी ईर्ष्या और ईर्ष्या से मुक्त है, और उसका मन भौतिक सुख और संकट में समान है। ॥ ११-११-२९ ॥

कामैरहतधीर्दान्तो मृदुः शुचिरकिञ्चनः । अनीहो मितभुक्शान्तः स्थिरो मच्छरणो मुनिः ॥ ११-११-३० ॥
Thus, he dedicates his time to work for the welfare of all others. His intelligence is never bewildered by material desires, and he has controlled his senses. His behavior is always pleasing, never harsh and always exemplary, and he is free from possessiveness. He never endeavors in ordinary, worldly activities, and he strictly controls his eating. He therefore always remains peaceful and steady. A saintly person is thoughtful and accepts Me as his only shelter. ॥ 11-11-30 ॥

इस प्रकार, वह अपना समय अन्य सभी के कल्याण के लिए काम करने में समर्पित करते हैं। उनकी बुद्धि भौतिक इच्छाओं से कभी भ्रमित नहीं होती और उन्होंने अपनी इंद्रियों को वश में कर रखा है। उसका व्यवहार हमेशा सुखदायक होता है, कभी कठोर नहीं होता और हमेशा अनुकरणीय होता है और वह स्वामित्व की भावना से मुक्त होता है। वह कभी भी सामान्य, सांसारिक गतिविधियों में प्रयास नहीं करता है, और वह अपने खाने पर सख्ती से नियंत्रण रखता है। अत: वह सदैव शान्त और स्थिर रहता है। साधु व्यक्ति विचारशील होता है और मुझे ही अपना एकमात्र आश्रय मानता है। ॥ ११-११-३० ॥
