निशम्य शप्तमतदर्हं नरेन्द्रं स ब्राह्मणो नात्मजमभ्यनन्दत् । अहो बतांहो महदद्य ते कृतमल्पीयसि द्रोह उरुर्दमो धृतः ।। १-१८-४१ ।।

sanskrit

The father heard from his son that the King had been cursed, although he should never have been condemned, for he was the best amongst all human beings. The ṛṣi did not congratulate his son, but, on the contrary, began to repent, saying: Alas! What a great sinful act was performed by my son. He has awarded heavy punishment for an insignificant offense. ।। 1-18-41 ।।

english translation

पिता ने अपने पुत्र से सुना कि राजा को शाप दिया गया है, यद्यपि उसे इस तरह दण्डित नहीं किया जाना था, क्योंकि वह समस्त मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ था। ऋषि ने अपने पुत्र को शाबाशी नहीं दी, अपितु उलटे वे यह कहकर पछताने लगे, हाय! मेरे पुत्र ने कितना बड़ा पाप-कर्म कर लिया। उसने एक तुच्छ अपराध के लिए इतना भारी दण्ड दे दिया है। ।। १-१८-४१ ।।

न वै नृभिर्नरदेवं पराख्यं सम्मातुमर्हस्यविपक्वबुद्धे । यत्तेजसा दुर्विषहेण गुप्ता विन्दन्ति भद्राण्यकुतोभयाः प्रजाः ।। १-१८-४२ ।।

sanskrit

O my boy, your intelligence is immature, and therefore you have no knowledge that the king, who is the best amongst human beings, is as good as the Personality of Godhead. He is never to be placed on an equal footing with common men. The citizens of the state live in prosperity, being protected by his unsurpassable prowess. ।। 1-18-42 ।।

english translation

हे बालक, तुम्हारी बुद्धि अपरिपक्व है, अतएव तुम्हें ज्ञान नहीं है कि राजा मनुष्यों में सर्वोत्तम और भगवान् के तुल्य होता है। उसकी तुलना कभी भी सामान्य लोगों के साथ नहीं की जा सकती। उसके राज्य के नागरिक उसके दुर्दम तेज से सुरक्षित रहकर समृद्धिमय जीवन व्यतीत करते हैं। ।। १-१८-४२ ।।

अलक्ष्यमाणे नरदेवनाम्नि रथाङ्गपाणावयमङ्ग लोकः । तदा हि चौरप्रचुरो विनङ्क्ष्यत्यरक्ष्यमाणोऽविवरूथवत्क्षणात् ।। १-१८-४३ ।।

sanskrit

My dear boy, the Lord, who carries the wheel of a chariot, is represented by the monarchical regime, and when this regime is abolished the whole world becomes filled with thieves, who then at once vanquish the unprotected subjects like scattered lambs. ।। 1-18-43 ।।

english translation

हे बालक, एकछत्र राजसत्ता द्वारा रथचक्र धारण करनेवाले भगवान् का प्रतिनिधित्व किया जाता है और जब राजसत्ता ही मिट जाती है, तो सारा संसार चोरों से भर जाता है, जो तितर बितर मेमनों की भाँति असुरक्षित प्रजा को तुरन्त परास्त कर देते हैं। ।। १-१८-४३ ।।

तदद्य नः पापमुपैत्यनन्वयं यन्नष्टनाथस्य वसोर्विलुम्पकात् । परस्परं घ्नन्ति शपन्ति वृञ्जते पशून् स्त्रियोऽर्थान् पुरुदस्यवो जनाः ।। १-१८-४४ ।।

sanskrit

Due to the termination of the monarchical regimes and the plundering of the people’s wealth by rogues and thieves, there will be great social disruptions. People will be killed and injured, and animals and women will be stolen. And for all these sins we shall be responsible. ।। 1-18-44 ।।

english translation

राजा की शासन-प्रणाली के समाप्त होने तथा धूर्तों एवं चोरों द्वारा लोगों की सम्पत्ति लुटने के कारण बड़े-बड़े सामाजिक विघ्न आयेंगे; लोग हताहत किये जायेंगे; पशु तथा स्त्रियाँ चुराई जायेंगी और इन सारे पापों के उत्तरदायी होंगे हम सब। ।। १-१८-४४ ।।

तदाऽऽर्यधर्मश्च विलीयते नृणां वर्णाश्रमाचारयुतस्त्रयीमयः । ततोऽर्थकामाभिनिवेशितात्मनां शुनां कपीनामिव वर्णसङ्करः ।। १-१८-४५ ।।

At that time the people in general will fall systematically from the path of a progressive civilization in respect to the qualitative engagements of the castes and the orders of society and the Vedic injunctions. Thus they will be more attracted to economic development for sense gratification, and as a result there will be an unwanted population on the level of dogs and monkeys. ।। 1-18-45 ।।

english translation

उस समय सामान्य लोग जाति (वर्ण) तथा समाज-व्यवस्था (आश्रम) के गुणात्मक कार्यों के रूप में प्रगतिशील सभ्यता के मार्ग से तथा वैदिक आदेशों से धीरे-धीरे गिर जायेंगे। इस प्रकार वे इन्द्रियतृप्ति के निमित्त आर्थिक विकास के प्रति अधिक आकृष्ट होंगे जिसके फलस्वरूप कुत्तों तथा बन्दरों के स्तर की अवांछित जनसंख्या को बढ़ावा मिलेगा। ।। १-१८-४५ ।।
