धर्मराज उवाच ॥ शृणु त्वं हि ऋषिश्रेष्ठ दुःखशान्तिर्मता मम ॥ पृच्छामि त्वां महाप्राज्ञ कथनीयन्त्वया प्रभो॥ १६॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said:— O excellent sage, listen. I seek for the alleviation of our grief. O intelligent one, I am putting this humble question. O lord, you shall kindly explain.
english translation
ईदृशं चैव दुःखं च पुरा प्राप्तश्च कश्चन॥ वयमेव परं दुःखं प्राप्ता वै नैव कश्चन॥ १७॥
Has anyone formerly suffered this sort of grief? Verily we alone have had it. None else.

व्यास उवाच ॥ राज्ञस्तु नलनाम्नो वै निषधाधिपतेः पुरा ॥ भवद्दुःखाधिकं दुःखं जातन्तस्य महात्मनः ॥ १८॥
Vyāsa said:— Formerly, Nala, the king of Niṣadha, the noble soul, had experienced a misery more than yours.

हरिश्चन्द्रस्य नृपतेर्जातं दुःखम्महत्तरम् ॥ अकथ्यन्तद्विशेषेण परशोकावहन्तथा ॥ १९ ॥
A great calamity and distress befell king Hariścandra. It cannot be adequately described. It makes others too distressed.

दुःखम्तथैव विज्ञेयं रामस्याप्यथ पाण्डव ॥ यच्छ्रुत्वा स्त्रीनराणां च भवेन्मोहो महत्तरः ॥ २० ॥
O Pāṇḍavas, even Rāma had to suffer that misery on hearing which men and women would be greatly affected.
