यमाश्रित्य महावीरं कौरवास्सुम हाबलाः ।। भीष्मादयो बभूवुस्तेऽजेया अपि दिवौकसाम् ।। १६ ।।

By resorting to that powerful hero, Bhīsma and other Kauravas became invincible even to the gods.

यद्भयात्पाण्डवास्सर्वे कौरवाञ्जेतुमक्षमाः ।। आसन्नष्टामहावीरा अपि सर्वे च कोविदाः ।। १७ ।।

Fearing him, the Pāṇḍavas, though they were great heroes and very skilful, became incapable of conquering the Kauravas.

कृष्णोपदेशतश्शम्भोस्तपः कृत्वातिदारुणम् ।। प्राप्य चास्त्रं शम्भुवराज्जिग्ये तानर्जुनस्ततः ।। १८।।

At the instance of Kṛṣṇa, Arjuna, performed the severe penance of Śiva and obtained a divne missile duo to Śiva’s boon. He then conquered the Kauravas.

अश्वत्थामा महावीरो महादेवांशजो मुने ।। तदापि तद्भक्तिवशः स्वप्रतापमदर्शयत् ।। १९ ।।

O sage, although the great hero Aśvatthāman was born of a part of lord Śiva. Still due to his devotion to the Kauravas, he exhibited his full vigour.

azvatthAmA mahAvIro mahAdevAMzajo mune || tadApi tadbhaktivazaH svapratApamadarzayat || 19 ||

विनाश्य पाण्डवसुताञ्छिक्षितानपि यत्नतः ।। कृष्णादिभिर्महावीरैरनिवार्य्यबलः परैः ।। २० ।।

He destroyed the sons of Pāṇḍavas though they were trained in warfare by Kṛṣṇa and other great heroes. He had the strength that could not be withstood bv the enemy.
