शृणु तात प्रवक्ष्यामि शिवस्य परमात्मनः॥ सुरेश्वरावतारस्ते धौम्याग्रज हितावहम् ॥ १॥
O dear, listen, I shall narrate the incarnation of śiva, the great soul, as Indra in which he was beneficial to Dhaumya’s elder brother.
english translation
zRNu tAta pravakSyAmi zivasya paramAtmanaH॥ surezvarAvatAraste dhaumyAgraja hitAvaham ॥ 1॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptव्याघ्रपादसुतो धीमानुपमन्युस्सताम्प्रियः ॥ जन्मान्तरेण संसिद्धः प्राप्तो मुनिकुमारताम्॥ २ ॥
The intelligent son of Vyāghrapāda, Upamanyu, the beloved of the good, became the son of a sage in another birth. He achieved great attainments then.
english translation
vyAghrapAdasuto dhImAnupamanyussatAmpriyaH ॥ janmAntareNa saMsiddhaH prApto munikumAratAm॥ 2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptउवास मातुलगृहे स मात्रा शिशुरे व हि ॥ उपमन्युर्व्याघ्रपादिस्स्याद्दरिद्रश्च दैवतः॥ ३ ॥
Upamanyu, the son of Vyāghrapāda, while yet a small child stayed in his uncle’s house along with his mother. Due to adverse fate he was very poor.

uvAsa mAtulagRhe sa mAtrA zizure va hi ॥ upamanyurvyAghrapAdissyAddaridrazca daivataH॥ 3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकदाचित्क्षीरमत्यल्पम्पीतवान्मातुलाश्रमे॥ ययाचे मातरम्प्रीत्या बहुशो दुग्ध लालसः ॥ ४॥
Once he tasted a little milk in his uncle’s hermitage. Approaching his mother he implored for milk, yearning for it.

kadAcitkSIramatyalpampItavAnmAtulAzrame॥ yayAce mAtaramprItyA bahuzo dugdha lAlasaH ॥ 4॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतच्छ्रुत्वा पुत्रवचनं तन्माता च तपस्विनी॥ सांतः प्रविश्याथ तदा शुभोपायमरीरचत् ॥ ५॥
On hearing the words of her son the pitiable mother went in and thought of a proper means to satisfy the child.

tacchrutvA putravacanaM tanmAtA ca tapasvinI॥ sAMtaH pravizyAtha tadA zubhopAyamarIracat ॥ 5॥
