ब्राह्मण उवाच ॥ किमादर्शेन चान्धस्य किं गृहेर्भैक्ष्यजीविनः ॥ किम्पुस्तकेन मूढस्य निस्त्रीकस्य धनेन किम्॥ ३६॥

The Brahmin said:— What can a blind man do with a mirror? Of what avail is a house to him who lives on alms? What can a fool do with a book? Of what avail is wealth to him who is bereft of his wife?

english translation

अतोऽहं हतपत्नीको भुक्तभोगो न कर्हिचित्॥ इमान्तवाग्रमहिषीं कामये दीयतामिति ॥ ३७॥

Hence I who am not satiated with the enjoyment of pleasures but I whose wife is snatched away desire your crowned queen. Let her be given to me.

english translation

दाता रसान्तवित्तस्य राज्यस्य गजवाजिनाम्॥ आत्मदेहस्य यस्यापि कलत्रस्य न कर्हिचित् ॥ ३८॥

Bhadrāyu said:— I can give all my assets to the extent of the earth, my kingdom, horses and elephants aiíd even my body to anyone but never can I give away my wife.

english translation

परदारोपभोगेन यत्पापं समुपार्जितम् ॥ न तत्क्षालयितुं शक्यं प्रायश्चित्तशतैरपि ॥ ३९॥

The sin that accrues by indulging in sexual intercourse with another man’s wife cannot be wiped off even by hundreds of expiatory rites.

english translation

ब्राह्मण उवाच ॥ आस्तां ब्रह्मवधं घोरमपि मद्यनिषेवणम् ॥ तपसा विधमिष्यामि किं पुनः पारदारिकम् ॥ ४०॥

The Brahmin said:— Let it be the terrible sin of the slaughter of a brahmin; let it be the sin of sipping wine, I shall quell it with my power of penance. What then the sin of enjoying another man’s wife?
