कृतं युद्धं त्वयेशेन स्वनाथेन मया प्रभो ॥ कृपां कृत्वा मयि स्वामिन्सोऽपराधो हि सह्यताम् ॥ १६ ॥
O lord, I fought with you, Śiva. Taking pity on me, O lord, let this offence be excused.
english translation
नन्दीश्वर उवाच ॥ तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा हरेर्दीनतया मुने ॥ भगवाञ्छंकरः प्राह रमेशं भक्तवत्सलः ॥ १७॥
Nandīśvara said:— O sage, on hearing those piteous words of Viṣṇu, lord Śiva favourably disposed to his devotees spoke to Viṣṇu.
english translation
हे विष्णो हे महाबुद्धे कथं मां ज्ञातवान्न हि ॥ युद्धं कृतं कृतस्तेऽद्य ज्ञानं सर्व्वं च विस्मृतम् ॥ १८॥
O Viṣṇu, O intelligent one, how is it that you did not know me? Why did you fight? Your intellect has completely been depraved.
english translation
आत्मानं किन्न जानासि मदधीनपराक्रमम् ॥ त्वया नात्र रतिः कार्या निवर्तस्व कुचारतः ॥ १९ ॥
Why don’t you realise yourself as one whose exploit is dependent on me. You should not have indulged in sexual dalliance there. You should have refrained from all misdeeds.
english translation
कामाधीनं कथं ज्ञानं स्त्रीषु सक्तो विहारकृत् ॥ नोचितन्तव देवेश स्मरणं विश्वतारणम्॥ २०॥
Why should your intellect be subservient to lust? That you should indulge in dalliance with women does not behove you, O lord of gods. Remember the task of uplifting the universe.
