    [व] अथाष्टकः पुनर एवान्वपृच्छन; मातामहं कौतुकाद इन्द्रकल्पम पृच्छामि तवां नृपते बरूहि सत्यं; कुतश च कस्यासि सुतश च कस्य कृतं तवया यद धि न तस्य कर्ता; लॊके तवदन्यः कषत्रियॊ बराह्मणॊ वा ॥ १-८८-२० ॥[va] athASTakaH punara evAnvapRcchana; mAtAmahaM kautukAda indrakalpama pRcchAmi tavAM nRpate barUhi satyaM; kutaza ca kasyAsi sutaza ca kasya kRtaM tavayA yada dhi na tasya kartA; lòke tavadanyaH kaSatriyò barAhmaNò vA ॥ 1-88-20 ॥'Vaisampayana narrated further, "Driven by curiosity, Ashtaka once more addressed his question to his grandfather, who was as glorious as Indra himself, inquiring, 'O sovereign, I beseech you to disclose the truth to me. From whence do you hail, who exactly are you, and of whom are you a progeny? On earth, is there any Brahmin or Kshatriya besides yourself who has accomplished what you have?"' ॥ 1-88-20 ॥

Is it through ascetic practices, or is it through the acquisition of knowledge? Moreover, how does one progressively ascend to those blissful abodes? I ask you to elucidate fully on this matter."' ॥ 1-85-21 ॥

    न विप्रं स्वेषु तिष्ठत्सु मृतं शूद्रेण नाययेत् । अस्वर्ग्या ह्याहुतिः सा स्यात्शूद्रसंस्पर्शदूषिता ॥ १०४ ॥na vipraM sveSu tiSThatsu mRtaM zUdreNa nAyayet । asvargyA hyAhutiH sA syAtzUdrasaMsparzadUSitA ॥ 104 ॥Let him not allow a dead Brahmana to be carried out by a Sudra, while men of the same caste are at hand; for that burnt-offering which is defiled by a Sudra’s touch is detrimental to (the deceased’s passage to) heaven.

    परापरायाः सकलम् अपरायाश्च वा पुनः । पराया यदि तद्वत्स्यात् परत्वं तद् विरुध्यते ॥ ५ ॥parAparAyAH sakalam aparAyAzca vA punaH । parAyA yadi tadvatsyAt paratvaM tad virudhyate ॥ 5 ॥(Is your reality) transcendent and immanent or is it completely immanent or completely transcendental? If it is immanent (then the very) nature of transcendence is contradicted.

    नादबिन्दुमयं वापि किं चन्द्रार्धनिरोधिकाः । चक्रारूढमनच्कं वा किं वा शक्तिस्वरूपकम् ॥ ४ ॥nAdabindumayaM vApi kiM candrArdhanirodhikAH । cakrArUDhamanackaM vA kiM vA zaktisvarUpakam ॥ 4 ॥Is it nada and bindu or can it be known by concentrating on the ascending psychic centres or the unstruck sound which emanates without any vibration? Or is it the form of the obstructing half moon or else is it the form of shakti?

    यद्यन्नमत्ति तेषां तु दशाहेनैव शुध्यति । अनदन्नन्नमह्नैव न चेत् तस्मिन् गृहे वसेत् ॥ १०२ ॥yadyannamatti teSAM tu dazAhenaiva zudhyati । anadannannamahnaiva na cet tasmin gRhe vaset ॥ 102 ॥But if he eats the food of the (Sapindas of the deceased), he is purified in ten days, (but) in one day, if he does not eat their food nor dwells in their house.
