[वै] ततॊ वैकर्तनं जित्वा पार्थॊ वैराटिम अब्रवीत एतन मां परापयानीकं यत्र तालॊ हिरण्मयः ॥ ४-५६-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana said: “Having vanquished Vikartana’s son, Arjuna said to the son of Virata, ‘Lead me to that division where the golden palmyra standard is seen.'' ॥ 4-56-1 ॥
english translation
अत्र शांतनवॊ भीष्मॊ रथे ऽसमाकं पितामहः काङ्क्षमाणॊ मया युद्धं तिष्ठत्य अमर दर्शनः आदास्याम्य अहम एतस्य धनुर्ज्याम अपि चाहवे ॥ ४-५६-२ ॥
'Here, on his chariot, is Santanu’s son, Bhishma, our grandfather, who, desiring battle with me, stands before me like a celestial being. I shall now take up my bow and engage him in combat.' ॥ 4-56-2 ॥

अस्यन्तं दिव्यम अस्त्रं मां चित्रम अद्य निशामय शतह्रदाम इवायान्तीं सतनयित्नॊर इवाम्बरे ॥ ४-५६-३ ॥
'Behold today this wonderful divine weapon as I discharge it - like a hundred autumn moons approaching, like lightning in the sky with thunder.' ॥ 4-56-3 ॥

सुवर्णपृष्ठं गाण्डीवं दरक्ष्यन्ति कुरवॊ मम दक्षिणेनाथ वामेन कतरेण सविद अस्यति इति मां संगताः सर्वे तर्कयिष्यन्ति शत्रवः ॥ ४-५६-४ ॥
'Today, the Kauravas shall behold the golden-back of my Gandiva, and gathered together, they shall dispute among themselves, saying: “By which hand—right or left—does he wield it?”' ॥ 4-56-4 ॥
english translation
शॊणितॊदां रथावर्तां नागनक्रां दुरत्ययाम नदीं परस्यन्दयिष्यामि परलॊकप्रवाहिनीम ॥ ४-५६-५ ॥
'I shall make a dreadful river of death flow today toward the other world, with blood for its waters, chariots for its eddies, and elephants for its crocodiles.' ॥ 4-56-5 ॥
