परतिजग्राह तान कर्णः शरान अग्निशिखॊपमान शरवर्षेण महता वर्षमाण इवाम्बुदः ॥ ४-५५-१६ ॥
'But the mighty car-warrior Karna met this discharge with an arrowy shower of his own, as heavy and relentless as a downpour from the clouds.' ॥ 4-55-16 ॥
english translation
उत्पेतुः शरजालानि घॊररूपाणि सर्वशः अविध्यद अश्वान बाहॊश च हस्तावापं पृथक पृथक ॥ ४-५५-१७ ॥
'The fierce volley of arrows spread in all directions, striking steeds, armor, and shields alike, laying waste to everything in its path.' ॥ 4-55-17 ॥

सॊ ऽमृष्यमाणः कर्णस्य निषङ्गस्यावलम्बनम चिच्छेद निशिताग्रेण शरेण नतपर्वणा ॥ ४-५५-१८ ॥
'Unable to withstand that fierce assault, Arjuna severed the string of Karna’s bow with a straight and sharp arrow.' ॥ 4-55-18 ॥

उपासङ्गाद उपादाय कर्णॊ बाणान अथापरान विव्याध पाण्डवं हस्ते तस्य मुष्टिर अशीर्यत ॥ ४-५५-१९ ॥
'Karna then drew another arrow from his quiver and struck Arjuna’s hand, loosening his grip on the bow.' ॥ 4-55-19 ॥

ततः पार्थॊ महाबाहुः कर्णस्य धनुर अच्छिनत स शक्तिं पराहिणॊत तस्मै तां पार्थॊ वयधमच छरैः ॥ ४-५५-२० ॥
'Then the mighty-armed Partha, seizing the moment, shattered Karna’s bow into fragments and hurled a powerful shower of arrows at him.' ॥ 4-55-20 ॥
