[अर्ज] कर्ण यत ते सभामध्ये बहु वाचा विकत्थितम न मे युधि समॊ ऽसतीति तद इदं परत्युपस्थितम ॥ ४-५५-१ ॥

'Arjuna said: “The time, O Karna, has come to prove the boast you so loudly proclaimed in the assembly—that none is equal to you in battle."' ॥ 4-55-1 ॥

english translation

[arja] karNa yata te sabhAmadhye bahu vAcA vikatthitama na me yudhi samò 'satIti tada idaM paratyupasthitama ॥ 4-55-1 ॥

अवॊचः परुषा वाचॊ धर्मम उत्सृज्य केवलम इदं तु दुष्करं मन्ये यद इदं ते चिकीर्षितम ॥ ४-५५-२ ॥

'Today, O Karna, as you contend with me in this fierce conflict, you shall know your true strength and learn not to disdain others. Setting aside all courtesy, you uttered many harsh words; yet what you now attempt is, I think, exceedingly difficult.' ॥ 4-55-2 ॥

avòcaH paruSA vAcò dharmama utsRjya kevalama idaM tu duSkaraM manye yada idaM te cikIrSitama ॥ 4-55-2 ॥

यत तवया कथितं पूर्वं माम अनासाद्य किं चन तद अद्य कुरु राधेय कुरुमध्ये मया सह ॥ ४-५५-३ ॥

'Arjuna said: “Do you now, O son of Radha, in the sight of the Kurus, fulfill the boast you made before, disregarding me."' ॥ 4-55-3 ॥

yata tavayA kathitaM pUrvaM mAma anAsAdya kiM cana tada adya kuru rAdheya kurumadhye mayA saha ॥ 4-55-3 ॥

यत सभायां सम पाञ्चालीं लिश्यमानां दुरात्मभिः दृष्टवान असि तस्याद्य फलम आप्नुहि केवलम ॥ ४-५५-४ ॥

'You who witnessed the Panchala princess wronged by villains in the assembly—now face the consequence of that deed.' ॥ 4-55-4 ॥

yata sabhAyAM sama pAJcAlIM lizyamAnAM durAtmabhiH dRSTavAna asi tasyAdya phalama Apnuhi kevalama ॥ 4-55-4 ॥

धर्मपाशनिबद्धेन यन मया मर्षितं पुरा तस्य राधेय कॊपस्य विजयं पश्य मे मृधे ॥ ४-५५-५ ॥

'Bound by the restraints of righteousness then, I refrained from vengeance. But behold now, O son of Radha, the result of that wrath unfolds in this very conflict.' ॥ 4-55-5 ॥

dharmapAzanibaddhena yana mayA marSitaM purA tasya rAdheya kòpasya vijayaM pazya me mRdhe ॥ 4-55-5 ॥
