यत्र चापश्यत स वै तिरॊ वर्षाणि वर्षति तत्र तानि दृढैः पाशैः सुगाढं पर्यबन्धत ॥ ४-५-२६ ॥

'He fastened them securely in spots he judged strong enough to bear the weight and safe from rain and damp.' ॥ 4-5-26 ॥

english translation

yatra cApazyata sa vai tirò varSANi varSati tatra tAni dRDhaiH pAzaiH sugADhaM paryabandhata ॥ 4-5-26 ॥

शरीरं च मृतस्यैकं समबध्नन्त पाण्डवाः विवर्जयिष्यन्ति नरा दूराद एवं शमीम इमाम आबद्धं शवम अत्रेति गन्धम आघ्राय पूतिकम ॥ ४-५-२७ ॥

'And the Pandavas hung a corpse upon the tree, knowing that people, catching its foul stench, would say, ‘Surely, a dead body is tied here,’ and would thus keep away from it.' ॥ 4-5-27 ॥

english translation

zarIraM ca mRtasyaikaM samabadhnanta pANDavAH vivarjayiSyanti narA dUrAda evaM zamIma imAma AbaddhaM zavama atreti gandhama AghrAya pUtikama ॥ 4-5-27 ॥

अशीतिशत वर्षेयं माता न इति वादिनः कुलधर्मॊ ऽयम अस्माकं पूर्वैर आचरितॊ ऽपि च समासजाना वृक्षे ऽसमिन्न इति वै वयाहरन्ति ते ॥ ४-५-२८ ॥

'And when the shepherds and cowherds asked about the corpse, those repressors of foes replied, “She is our mother, aged a hundred and eighty years. According to the tradition upheld by our forefathers, we have suspended her body here.”' ॥ 4-5-28 ॥

english translation

azItizata varSeyaM mAtA na iti vAdinaH kuladharmò 'yama asmAkaM pUrvaira Acaritò 'pi ca samAsajAnA vRkSe 'saminna iti vai vayAharanti te ॥ 4-5-28 ॥

आ गॊपालावि पालेभ्य आचक्षाणाः परंतपाः आजग्मुर नगराभ्याशं पार्थाः शत्रुनिबर्हणाः ॥ ४-५-२९ ॥

'Then the Parthas, those repressors of foes, spoke thus to the shepherds and cowherds, and proceeded towards the outskirts of the city.' ॥ 4-5-29 ॥

A gòpAlAvi pAlebhya AcakSANAH paraMtapAH Ajagmura nagarAbhyAzaM pArthAH zatrunibarhaNAH ॥ 4-5-29 ॥

जयॊ जयन्तॊ विजयॊ जयत्सेनॊ जयद्बलः इति गुह्यानि नामानि चक्रे तेषां युधिष्ठिरः ॥ ४-५-३० ॥

'And for purposes of non-discovery Yudhisthira kept these (five) names for himself and his brothers respectively, viz., Jaya, Jayanta, Vijaya, Jayatsena, and Jayatvala.' ॥ 4-5-30 ॥

jayò jayantò vijayò jayatsenò jayadbalaH iti guhyAni nAmAni cakre teSAM yudhiSThiraH ॥ 4-5-30 ॥
